What is the normal/average cost one would think to be in the norm to pay for a dog to be started on birds etc. for training? Thanks!

Moose, are you looking to do this yourself with help, or send the dog out?? Most pro's are usually between $400 & $500 a month, plus birds shot.(they usually don't charge for pigeon/released birds worked) Some do individual sessions for around $30 to $40 an hour.

If you're planning on training yourself,  quail run between $3 & $3.50 each, chukar around $5 & phez between $8 & $10, although I don't recommend starting a dog in training on phez. If you have a place to put a small pigeon coop, that is your cheapest route, once you have them homing, they can be used repeatedly, although quail can be recalled also.

Figure around 4 to 10 birds per session, depending on what you are working on (basic pointing, steadying, stop-to-flush, etc) at least twice a week. (10 being the high end to help steady a dog, by planting a couple spots with multiple birds close together, not 10 seperately.)

Then there's equipment, basic training gear like a cc, whistle & blank gun isn't all that expensive, but depending on how involved you want to get, e-collars & remote launchers can be costly.(manual launchers aren't bad priced) Hope this helps some.

Yes that did help some. Thank you. I have trained my own dogs myself and they are doing very well. We have a friend who owns a preserve so we go there about once a week to work on birds and then I do planted stuff around the house and our 5 acres here to keep them going good inbetween but some people that have seen my boy hunt want me to work on starting their dogs for them. I would not consider myself ready to finish anyone elses dog at this point but with the resorces I have feel I could start a dog well on its way for someone to use as a nice hunting companion. I didn't know what was normal for charging etc. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
