Anyone use a quail recall box?  I am very interested in building one this spring, let me know where you found your design?  Also, anyone in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania area that might have some bobwhites I can pick up?  Most of the bird breeders sell in large batches of 100 or more, or they are selling flight conditioned birds for an arm and a leg.

My hubby made ours. If you like I can try and find out what he did and send it to you.

Yes, that would be great. Would also like to know how happy you have been with it? Any issues or improvements you would make next time around?

Nope, Andrew is a builder and has put his talents to good use when it comes to building training tools.
It was a pocket saver b/c I was planting covies to get Haiko to become reliably steady and all the birds always recalled. And I had no worries about just letting them walk out and planting themselves where ever they wanted. More like natural hunting situations.
As a training tool it is worth the effort to build.

These work very well and for the time and materials you'd have to invest in doing it yourself they are a real bargain. CR

If you could PM me with that info also, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew said he used the picture in Joan Bailey's book - How to Help Gun dogs Train Themselves - as a guide.

It works out great because there are birds that can be seen and those that can't with multiple, separate ins and outs.
The book itself only gives a material list.

As an aside,
you can let the quail live in the box but we don't.We keep the box, when not in use,in a pen about 3'x3' and the quail go in and out at will.At one time there can be 40 birds in the box 20+ of which I release/plant for training. The birds are not really sheltered from the elements and handling is minimal.
