i am picking up my first german shorthair in about a week and i just had a couple questions for you experienced owners. i was brrought up with brittany spaniels and now im out of the house married and on my own with my wife. i trained both myself.

we found a litter of 6 month old puppies im just wondering how difficult or not difficuly it will be to train him? i dont think it should be to bad but i dont know much about training this specific breed. is there anything i need to be careful with or stress more while working with him? any tips will be helpful and i would greatly appreciate any insight that can be given. thanks alot!

You shouldn't have any problems with training a shorthair if you have trained brittanys. Shorthairs are very smart and catch on quickly and don't do well with repeating a command. If they get it right the first time, reward and move on. Also, shorthairs respond really well to praise and, I think, do much better with mostly positive training. That being said, there may come a time where you need to use a negative correction, but those are typically few and far between. If you new pup hasn't been socialized much, I would do allot of socialization. Take him wherever you can and if there is a beginner obedience class, enroll. It will be good for the both of you. Most of all have fun and take lots of pictures. We love pictures, so be sure to post some when you get your new pup.

Welcome to the wild and crazy world of shorthairs. Once you own one you will wonder what took you so long. They are great dogs and you are guaranteed a ton of fun.

"i trained both myself."
Is that the wife and the dog or just the dogs? Just kidding. Welcome to the forum.

I wondered the same thing about training the wife!! As the wife in my own scenario... I laughed because I imagined saying the same thing vice versa.

I'm curious how your training is going. We also have our first GSP and she is a delight. She wows people where ever she goes. Now that she is old enough to go to puppy park, I smile to myself when I see owners of older dogs calling them over and over and over again... And looking with envy when I call Bella in and she comes running stops and sits at my side ;) now if only I could get her stop jumping on people - or better yet, get people to stop allowing her to jump on them despite my requests that they not as she is training. If only people were as trainable as GSPs :)

Hi! Firstly congrats on your first GSP!!! They are amazing creatures!!!

You shouldn't have problems with training a GSP as they are incredibly intelligent dogs and you've obviously have experience with gundogs as you've trained Brittanies. To me the major difference between the Brit and the GSP is that the GSP is a tougher dog and although most of my training is done with praise (to the dog) and positive reinforcement I have found that sometimes you need a slightly stronger hand with the GSP than the Brittany.

So a little bit of negative correction will probably be neccesary.

Good Luck!!

Have Fun!!

.......and post pics plz!
