Keely will be 9 weeks old on friday.  Should we be discouraging her from jumping up? I've taught her to get down when she jumps up when i'm standing or walking but should i be discouraging her from jumping up and at me when i'm on the floor playing with her? Will she recognise that there's a difference or should i be discouraging it regardless?  It's such a puppy thing to leap when she's excited and i feel that merely playing with her encourages it when i'm on the floor with her

I meant to add that she's been barking when i'm stirring and cooling down her food, so i've just put the food down on the counter, left the room and ignored her for 30 seconds til she calms down, and leaving the room and ignoring her seems to work for jumping up too.  I'm just not sure that i should be giving her negative signals for jumping AT me whilst i'm on the floor playing.

Sounds like your heading the right way. Puppies HATE being ignored and any attention to them, whether we are telling them off or praising them, is good attention!

For the jumping up yes you should stop her doing it at any time whether it be playing or walking or up on the counter. Completely ignore her dont say anything to her and just turn away - if she really wont get down then you may have to 'push' her off but dont make eye contact - nothing. You can then develop your training to asking her to 'up' when you want her to (if you do!) but you must only do this once she has established that generally jumping up is bad or you will ruin your hard work! It is SO important to be conisistent with any type of training esp. with this breed. Unless you've asked her dont let her. Even if your not feeling up to training never pay her attention when doing a behaviour you dont want - the same with barking - never 'shout' back which is how they see it.
When preparing food your doing the right thing by leaving or even putting her out of the room until she has calmed down. If she comes in and does it again - put her straight back out still ignoring her.
The most important thing to remember when training is always remember to exagagerate the praise when she isnt barking or jumping etc etc. Be over the top with the praise but cut it off before she gets bored of it!
So sorry for the lecture lol but I hope this helps. Be consistent and PATIENT and you will get there in the end!!

Thanks. I know that ignoring them is the best way. we just lost our 2.5 year old gsp and i've grown up surrounded by dogs so i have a decent idea how to encourage and discourage certain behaviours. I'm not too keen to "push" her off as it's still attention and contact at the end of the day. I guess i'm just wandering if discouraging excited play (which includes jumping to get a toy) is maybe a little to far for a pup.

I always discourage the jumping on people. i have elderly parents and do not want any of my GSPs jumping up on someone and knocking them down. I will either ignore the behavior or will take their collar and pull them back down. Once on all fours I praise them. I later (much later) teach them to jump up and give hugs and kisses. My command is hugs and kisses. I do not teach that though until they have a sound understanding of not jumping.
