I just adopted a wonderful 2yr old female from a family that didn't have enough time for her.  She doesn't have any training on her, except for house and crate training and a spotty sit and stay that is getting better.  She has a lot on natural ability it seems and points at birds on leash while walking.

Please give me any advice on getting her hunting.  I mainly just dove hunt so I want her to retrive for me, but I also don't want to limit her training.  What advice do you have for me?

Thanks

I would start with the basics in obedience, and also introduce her to birds (quail or pigeon) and see what she does. I would stay away from shooting over her until she is really rev'd up about birds and then gradually introduce the gun from a pretty good distance while she is chasing a bird. You can gradually work in closer if she does not react. Have you ever trained a dog before? What part of the country are you in? If you have never trained a bird dog before you might want to find a good trainer or a group like NAVDHA to get you started.

I have never trained a dog, but I have two friends that have trained several hunting dogs that are going to help me. Are there any books of videos that you would recommend for obedience and hunt training? I live east of Dallas.

I would recommend Perfect Start and Perfect Finish DVDs.  They are not cheap, but them are very good and excellent for someone who is starting out training a dog.  Here is a link:

Also, look into joining NAVDHA and/or the Lone Star GSP Club.  You can google NAVDHA, and here is the link to the GSP club: www.lsgspc.org/

Also if you ever want to work with a real pro, there is one that lives outside of Hamilton which probably isn't too far from you.  Let me know if you are interested and I will send you his contact info.

Good luck and you should introduce yourself and post pictures over in the General section of the forum.

A dove hunting dog is a pick up dog. The dog is required to stay by the shooter and then sent to hunt/retrieve dead.
If this is what you will primarily use the dog for then you would benefit from training like a retriever - I recommend Evan Graham or Mike Lardy.

If you want to train like an upland bird dog then the material mentioned above will be helpful.

Make sure you intro gunfire properly, dove shooting sounds like a war zone and can create a gunshy dog if not careful.
