OK -- everybody out there who has told us in the past about the wonderful work your GSP Therapy Dog does -- here's one for you. The AKC has announced a new title program for therapy dogs -- see link below.

Unfortunately not all Therapy Dog programs are included in the AKC program.  I belong and work with Therapy Pet Pals of Texas and they looked into this, but for a smaller non-profit organization they felt the requirements would be too hard and that the AKC goals were not really in line with their mission.  I was disappointed, but understand as they are truly focused on helping organizations in Central TX and South TX that are not typically covered by the larger organizations.  So, even though I have a GSP who is a wonderful therapy dog that has been in service now for about 4 years, she will not be able to get a title through the AKC program.

Personally, I would rather see a program that did not depend on the Therapy organizations participation, but more on the performance of a therapy dog and the dedication of a therapy team.

Just my two cents,

Bev

You have a really good point there because my dogs were certified by TDI but I can not belong to their group because they only insure volunteers and I bring my dogs to work to work with kids with autism and TDI does not allow you to bring your dog to your job. Perhaps AKC needs to know this.

ThD- Therapy dog for over 50 visits.

Too bad the old timers couldn't be grandfathered into this.   I will always remember the story about Linda's wonderful GSP "Lucky" who was rescued and had over 600 therapy dog visits.

In this economy, this ia a very rewarding thing to do with your companion.  The costs are minimal and the feedback is priceless.  The stories on the AKC web site are similar to the ones that I personally encountered when doing therapy work.  I still have a photo of a gentleman who had terminal brain cancer.  We went to visit him and he began petting and talking to my lab, smiling.  The family took his picture and told me that it was the first words he had spoken in many months. He passed away the next day and the family asked permission to use the photo for the funeral.  I really miss therapy work and hope to have time in the future as I have two excellent candidates at home (Sophia and Belle).
