Brandi was in season in June, and now I'm dealing with some signs of a false pregnancy. It's really only one sign, and that is mammary puffiness. Have you or would you show a bitch with this?
It's not horrible, but it's enough that I think it could hold us back. It's not as noticeable from a direct side view, but more so going away.
I do not want to be a "filler" dog or waste $30 a day x 4 days in travel, if this is going to be a deal breaker for a judge. The first 3 days of the show are worth singles, and the 4th day is a major. I need 1 single and 1 major to finish. I have thought about going for a couple days, and seeing if we can compete. But I figure others will see it as unsportsmanlike if I do that...and then don't return for the last couple days.

Those are her front legs in the picture, showing the view from the rear

This is a side view, and I tried to draw a line, where her shape would normally be--but it turned out kind of sloppy. She get's about an inch droopy for the 2nd and 3rd set of nipples.

| Conformation was originally for judging breeding stock. One of the reasons why the dogs are intact. I have never seen anything like that hold a dog back from winning. In fact, my girl, Halo, was in season for both her major wins in the AKC. I also had her back in the show ring in October after she had had a litter of puppies in mid-August. She had eleven little rug rats that she was nursing. In her first show back she went BOS in two shows and earned some Grand Champion points. So if you like the judges I would go. |

Thanks for responding Bev! Your first hand experience is good to know. I don't know the judges. I've probably made a dozen show weekends so far, last year and this, and I don't think I've ever had the same judge twice yet...except when I made it into Groups once. It's just so darn obvious on a shorthair, I figured I'd get laughed out of the ring. In trying to Google, to find more info, I have been to a few other breed kennel sites. It seemed like some folks had said their girl still did very well, but I also remember a comment about not doing well, and how a show dog is suppose to be in ideal fit condition. I spoke with my husband, and he reminds me that I might find a judge or two, that still thinks she's tops--despite the saggy undercarriage. So with some very good advice from both of you, I'm leaning towards going. Of course I'm still hoping it's all better by Friday AM too! |

PM me the judges names and I will tell you if I know any of them. I think most of the judges understand the issues with bitches. I would tell them when Halo was in season, but the swollen girl parts didn't seem to discourage them from putting her up. After the puppies Halo's undercarriage pretty obvious. Even today her boobs have not shrunk back to their pre-puppy size. The fitness applies to the dog in general and a bitch can be fit, but still have the swollen girl parts. I would go and have fun. |

I would not worry about it. You can get some campho-phenique (or oil of camphor) and rub that on the nipples, also withholding water for a day will take care of the problem if it really bothers you. It doesn't look from the pictures as if there is much of a problem but even if she does look a bit "pouffy" in the ring, you can always engage the judge in some brief conversation...oh yes, we have a bit of a false pregnancy going on here...and you may get some suggestions for the future... FWIW, I don't think there is a problem with asking about judges, calling them by name, etc. as long as the responses are private if really not positive. There is a fun little e-list called showdays.com that allows one to rate judges and make comments about them. It is open to anyone to go and look around, and you do get a lot less of the "oh I really like Judge Snuffleupagus because he gave me a major" and more of the "what they are really looking for". She looks just fine to me and I'd go and have fun! Good luck on that major and on finishing your girl! Phyllis and the Singltrak Furtribe |

Thanks for the advice ladies. By this past weekend, she was looking pretty good. It was a bittersweet weekend. A handler pulled on the 4th day of the show--the only day with a class major. I am utterly bummed, as a similar circumstance happened a year ago to the date, at the same show...with Brandi getting WB & BOS that day too. We could have still gotten a major this weekend, but would have had to go over 4 specials, and that was a pretty tall order. With this being one of the last shows of the year (within a couple hours of home), and having had very few opportunities at class majors this year, it feels like we will never finish...
On another note, I paid to have Brandi handled by Diane Engelking on Sunday & Monday. Brandi was bored in the ring with me, and with needing that supposed class major on Monday, I decided to see what a handler could do with her. Diane had her for just a few minutes, and Brandi was gaiting beautifully and gave Diane her full attention. She did the same for Diane's assistant, and they commented she was a fun dog to show, with a happy attitude. What a difference it was, and I realized how quickly Brandi probably would have finished, had she not had me as a handler for the first 11 points.
Friday--RWB (no major involved)
Saturday--RWB (no major involved)
Sunday--WB for 2 points (no major involved)
Monday--WB & BW for 2 points (class major broken )

| Congratulations on the wins!! And I am sure you will get that major one of these days. You know though it doesn't really matter if it is a single point or a major, it always seems like that last win is so elusive when you are that close. |
