I adopted a 3 yo GSP.  He weighs about 70 lbs, neutered, has been through obedience and rattlesnake training, has hunted dove, quail, duck and some pheasant.  Has papers and all that.

I'm a rookie dog owner at this type of machine.  He listens well and obeys his commands 90% of the time.  That is until he gets tired. He's got a few quirks I'd like to correct.

I'm reading Gun Dog by Wolters to get up to speed.

Working on some force fetching recently as well.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.  Glad to find this place.

Hi and welcome. Thanks for adopting.
Whats his name, how about a picture, too?

Wolter's had a lot of successs with his retriever books - he was a retriever man - and tried to reach the same success with the pinting dog crowd - but was not so lucky.
If you can return the book and we can recommend some others for you.

Now, why are you going thru force fetch? You say he has hunted a few species of bird and if he duck hunted he was only there for one reason - to retrieve.

If you are looking to use him as a hunting partner - take him out with you now,see what he's got in him - range, cooperation, point, steadiness, obedience - you will discover a lot about him once you get him outthere and exploring - then you will know what to expect come the hunting season.

Sound slike you got a nice started dog there.

I'm working on force fetching for dove season. I'm in Texas so we do that more than duck. He's also been chewing his fun bumpers and decoy toys since I got him.
His name is Dos. He just turned 3 last month.

If he's chewing retrieve items then he needs to be ff'd.
Dove will make things tough for him (and you)- they are small and their feathers come off easily.
Work on a solid hold and 'here', have a way of correcting that he undersatnds and progress on his schedule, not yours.

Don't they all look NICE when they're sleeping?
Gotta love a zonked out dog.

Any suggestions on how to curtail him pulling while on a leash? He has a choke collar I use to correct behavior,
He obeys sit, stay, heel while on or off the leash.
Just trying to get him, and me, to understand a loose leash.
Thanks for the help!

Nice looking dog. Where in TX are you? I am in Austin, TX and have 4 shorthairs. I will probably start taking my dogs back into the field to do some work for Hunt Tests as soon as the weather cools off. I go up to Spanish Oaks outside of Lexington. Maybe we could get together and work our dogs sometime.

Answers to your questions have been posted numerous times, so as pixie said try searching, but if you don't find an answer ping me and I will be glad to give you some suggestions.
