Copper is 6 months old now and has been out to run around our hunt club   (300+ acres) at least once a week. He runs about 150yds when by himself and 200-300+ when running with his training buddies.

We've trained a little on birds with a check cord, just to let him see them and get all excited. He's got a great nose and finds them quick every time.

He's got no issue with the blank pistol thanks to my fence building project where he was up my butt for 2000+ nails being fired from a nail gun with a fuel cell.

There's an even early September that I would love to enter, but want to know what to expect.

-What will he be judged on?

-What will I need to be doing? (Up until now, I've just been letting him learn to use his legs and smell out the planted birds... no pressure or real handling)

Thanks in advance.

On my way out the door for training right now so no time for a long post, but if you want to email me at drose@desertrosekennel.com I'll be glad to provide some info.

KF,

Not sure which Trial you have in mind, but in Puppy Stakes Judges are primarily going to be looking for desire to hunt, independence to stay "hopefully!" to your front and overall..... "POTENTIAL to become a Class Gundog". Many Trials will not even plant birds for Puppy Stakes, mainly IMO to avoid potential for bad habits to be learned and additionally, may or may not require a gun to be fired IF they should happen to find a bird. If they do find a bird, a Point sure is pretty, but not required.

In Derby Stakes, Judges will be looking for the same as above, but birds will be planted and at least one Point must be established on a found bird. They are not required to be steady, but must establish a Point. Again, "POTENTIAL to become a Class Gundog" is the primary thing that Judges will be looking for.

One could cover more, but every Judge is different and everyone will tend to lean to what they favor as "Potential". Judging being subjective as it is, this is not necessarily a bad thing IMO.

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Thanks for the overview Bruce.

I'm specifically talking about a walking field trial being put on by the OH GSP club in PA 8/27-28
