Our 24 week old puppy went in to the vet this morning to be spayed, and i got a call from the vet, who i've known since i was a child, asking if Wilmas parents were small beause she was worried about her size (she is only 24lbs). She was the runt of the litter and had a slight heart murmur, which we always attributed her small size to. She also commented that Wilma had alot of tartar build up on her back teeth, and said she probably isnt chewing with her back teeth. Anyways, that was all manageable and she was going to go ahead with the surgery. A little while she called back again and said that her size and the tartar buildup had her worried and she decided to do BUN test on her. She cancelled the surgery and we had blood work done and Wilma has been diagnosed with renal failure. The vet said at the most she has 2 years left but that was very very optimistic. My fiance and I are very sad and upset. We feel helpless but are just going to spoil Wilma until her quality of life starts to go downhill then we will have to put her down. Very sad day in our house.

I am so sorry. That is always very hard news, but even harder with a puppy. Live each day to the fullest and have fun with her. It is all about the quality. And when she does start having problems, ask your vet about letting you give her sub cutaneous fluids. It is very easy to do and may give you guys a few more months. I had a cocker spaniel that had renal failure and we bought her a few more months by giving her the fluids at home. Good luck and again I am very sorry about your news.

Thanks everyone for the support! I we really appreciate it. I had her out to my parents place this afternoon for a romp and took a few pictures so i'm going to give posting a picture a try! Maybe even a few! The first one is Wilma this afternoon, the second one is her soaking up some sun, and the third is her and our weimaraner Leaf taking it easy!

Wilma is a cutie and I love the last picture with her and her buddy, the Weim. Hope she continues to do well for a good long while.

Aww! I hate it when the vet gives the estimated time left for dogs to live. Let's pray for your dog.
