Ozzy and I decided to go play the HRC game this past weekend, and ran in a Started Retriever test. His water retrieves were less than perfect, but his land retrieves were beautiful--he even did better than some of the labs and goldens running! I figured it was good practice, and we had a really good time. He passed and we got pretty much the coolest ribbon we've ever received--green and camo!

Congratulations!

HRC is about versatility.
GSP genes go back field, forest and water.
No surprise to me you guys got a ribbon.

Nice picture.

WAY COOL and a HUGE CONGRATS! Better be careful showing up those Retrievers with a "Pointy Dog", they may stop allowing you to participate!

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Hey folk's bear with me as I am trying to learn. Sounds like congratulations are in order for this accomplishment ! Whats an HRC ? I always feel a little intimidated about this sector of the forum. These competition's sound like they must be a lot of fun for the pup's !

Thanks for the congrats! HRC is Hunting Retriever Club, UKC's retriever tests. It's a little different than AKC's hunt tests for retrievers.....one of the big differences is that it's open to all breeds in the Gun Dog group (equivalent of AKC's Sporting Group) where AKC's are only open to 'retriever' breeds. I don't know much more about AKC retriever hunt tests beyond that; never looked into it much since it's not open to my dog. But HRC tests were designed by hunters, for hunters. We tested in Started Hunting Retriever, which is the entry level and is designed to test the young hunting dog that hasn't had formal training on all the directive hand signals. It's two single marks on land, two single marks on water.

The judges were great at this test--really talked about what they were looking for at the beginning and were there to talk about your dog's test at the end. They had said at the beginning that you were allowed to use hand signals to your dog if they missed the mark but they didn't really want to see it, and I totally get it. One young dog ran and missed the mark, and the handler used hand signals trying to guide the dog, but the dog was too dependent on the handler and didn't search on its own, and never found the dog. They want the dog to learn independent search before relying on the handler so when they are trained they can rely on both. That's why I will not be going beyond Started until Ozzy has tested well in UT....I don't want to screw up his duck search. I think doing Started will help give him good practice for marking and retrieving in both the duck retrieve and field retrieves in UT. Like Francine said....versatility!

If the training is balanced you should not have an issue with duck searches.
Both my dogs were taught to handle while being exposed to duck searches and there are no issues with dependency.
Success, for me, in duck searches has been to get in the dog's head that if they search the will find something. Once this thought is in their head they will willingly search all bodies of water and not be discouraged when they don't find anything - such as when we go hiking. The dogs love the search. Building search has nothing to do with handling -IMO.
A dog expecting to be handled doesn't know the task, has no confidence and is not using their nose - these are trainer erors,IMO.

Since the board has been kinda slow, thought I would post some pics from Ozzy's HRC test:

He did not like the stinky mud--this pond was down hill from a pig barn.
