gidday from australia, this is my first post, my gsp is named Brandine and she is 18 months old. she was very active as a pup and could hardly stay still for a second but she is starting to settle down a bit now.
i want to teach her to bark on command but she doesn't bark much at all. she's not much of a watch-dog but occasionally barks at something but stops when i get there.
any advice on how to get her barking would be greatly appreciated.
In my experience the watch dog behavior really kicks in around two years old.
Thanks Gail, i want her to bark because we have feral pigs in the forest around our farm which i hunt. Previously i have been catching them with my sheep dogs, the dog does not have to touch the pig but can bail-up the pig just by barking at them. i have got really interested in the finding part of the hunt now so i thought i would try a dog with a really good nose but she is coming along a bit slower than i expected.
i'm starting to find out that the gsp is very slow to mature compared to the dogs ive had, it seems like a strange triat to have in a breed but i suppose it is there for a reason, they really test your patience at times.
