My neighbor directly across my (somewhat busy) street is a cat hourder and she is obsessed with chasing/catching a cat!

She has basic training but it all seems to go out the window if one of my kids is coming or going and she has the opportunity to bolt across the street. Any advice is appreciated!

Teach a solid sit - next to you, away from you, when she is preoccupied, when she is running, when she is running away from you, when food drops on the floor - up the temptation as much as you can.
Then when you really, really believe she is solid put a leash on her, walk her to the door(make sure you are in front of her - she needs to put that tush down at the spot you tell her to, not a few inches in front) and tell her sit, open the door and be ready. Do this at every single doorway in your home, in friends homes - everywhere.

My dogs know not to bother our farmer friends cats while on the farm but out in the field all is fair. Those pesky cats would eat out of my dog's bowls - while the dogs are eating!!!!! That's what boots are for. On the otherhand- it is enjoyable watching them hunt mice.

I would say teaching a unflawed stay...mine are coming along good with this even with distractions...my hardest stay is when people come over cuz they want to greet them so bad....I have a bi-level so I have my dogs sit and stay at the top of the stairs while people come in...Blitz does wonderful, Striker wasn't doing that well till I got the spray bottle...I would sit and stay them at the top of the stairs, then I would go down with the spray bottle to answer the door...if he got up he got sprayed...he is now listening!

Even at Nationals mine had nice stays....I used them for when they were in the campers and I would want to run out and do something quick like start the generator or put a bag chair away...I would stay them in the camper with the door open and I would go out and do whatever it was I had to do...they wanted out so bad cuz they could see all the other GSP's but they stayed!

I agree with what everyone suggested. Never her let her out a door until she is sitting and waiting nicely. At first it will be a pain, but be consistent and you will solve the problem.

Thank you for the replies. I will work with the stay as well. I've been working with her and she is already making great progress. She is truly the most intelligent dog (breed) I've ever had. She is my first GSP and I can't imagine life without her so I hope this works and I can keep her around as long as possible!

That's what I find. It's so useful topic! I don't have much experiences about training dog. I have some questions and I'll ask you later.

Mine are not perfect by any means and if I get careless and don't tell them to sit and stay they take advantage! But I am pretty happy with my progress so far and I have learned so much from everyone on here...
