I have showed in a breed where it's almost all o/h and then one that is quickly becoming almost all pro. I wondered what is the norm in gsp's? I'm not talking about specials, just finishing a reasonably nice dog or bitch....

Can be a lot of Pro's around here in GSPS, but you can sill be competetive if you have a nice enough dog. I show all mine myself.(only used a pro a cpl times at 4 day shows I cannot attend all 4 days)

I'd say it is about 50/50. I o/h all my dogs and as zodiak said if the dog is nice they can be finished. I personally prefer to see the owners handling their own dogs. Why on earth would you want someone else handling your dog unless you had some sort of physical handicap that prevented it from happening? I love UKC because they do not allow professional handlers.

I would say that in Colorado, it is primarily all owner-handled until you get to best of breed. Once in a while there will be a pro in the classes. Both Colton Johnson and Clint Livingston live in CO and both have had specials (Clint is showing the #1 GSP right now). I would say the specials ring at the moment is about 50/50. When I moved here in 2004 it was all O/H. I truly enjoy showing out here because everyone is very supportive of one another. I have finished both of my dogs all O/H and it is much more rewarding to me than if I had paid someone else to do it.

I am with you all. My ex and I showed our cavaliers, and it was one thing we NEVER fought about. lol Unfortunately, one big breeder in my area hired someone from the Green Team, and then it became about having a handler for a lot of people. I personally think it's fun to show. If I wanted to heavily campaign a dog, that would be different, but I really enjoy the whole show experience.

There are a whole lot more pro-handled GSPs back East, at least looking at the results it seems that way. :) There is absolutely NO reason you can't do it yourself, barring any physical impairments...its always fun for me to show a puppy because I can still run with them. Of course, if I would lose the weight I want to, then I could run with everyone! LOL!

I think you'll be fine, Patti!

Well, that's assuming I am able to get a puppy I can show! In cavaliers, for sure, you have to jump through hoops. I was lucky that the woman who sold my my first cavalier saw that we were dedicated, and she gave me a shot.

For now it's a dream. ;)
