My dogs fight quite a bit. Im wondering if this is a bad behavior I should stop. They never actually bite each other but it looks really intense sometimes...teeth showing..high pitch barking. If I let them go it usualy only lasts about a minute and a half and they tire themselves out. Again..no dog is getting hurt physically but it doesnt look like they are play fighting. If anyone could enlighten me to why they do this..if its bad to let them go..or anyother knowledge anyone has that would be great.

Oh and I would like to add that they get plenty of physical and mental exercise everyday.

Thanks to anyone who replys

Oh mine do this every, single night. The only thing in danger is the furniture in my house. Although it does sound and look pretty crazy, they have never broken skin, which is where I would get involved.

I can't say what your dogs are doing - playing, arguing, displaying dominance, but I can tell you now - I would stop it. There is room for only one boss (that's you)

Ill be sure to tell my girlfriend that..haha...Anyway.. Here is what I get out of how it starts. Dieter is a very energetic playful dog. Fin just likes sitting, laying and sleeping. Its ALWAYS Dieter that initiates it. It seems to start when Dieter says he wants to play and Fin says he doest. Fin TRIES to tell him no and then boom. Ok here is how I have been breaking them up.. I grab Dieter(he always starts it) wrap a leash around my waist and hook him up. It works great for spliting them up but he never seems to learn that they shouldnt fight in the first place. more tips would be great!

Mine have only ever done that twice when the pack dynamics have changed and one decides to challenge another (so far it has always been Halo trying to overthrow Belle which I do not want). It usually starts as play, but can escalate to more so as pixie said I stop it. The way I do that is I have an old fashioned straw broom that I pick and and whack down between them. It doesn't hurt anyone, but is sure does get their attention fast and they stop immediately. It also keeps me from having to get in the middle of the tussle.

Also, as everbell said there is something called play wrestling that young dogs will do and it can look pretty intense, but I don't think that is what is happening because you say Dieter always initiates and Fin does not want to play. Sounds to me like Dieter is now at an age where he is challenging Fin. So you need to be the pack leader here and put a stop to it once and for all.

Ok thanks guys.
Its never play turning into fighting...because Fin doesnt play. Dieter tries to play and it immediately turns into that.

Personally mate i'd say let them crack on. They're only playing. You'd know if it was serious, Fin would put Dieter in his place. I don't think there's any "dominance" issues because they're not challenging you.

GSP's are a fairly boisterous breed anyway and that's how they play. If it gets too rough for you then by all means tell them to stop, but not because they're fighting, but because they're going to wreck your house :)

I like to break it up tho. The dogs seem like they are in a state of mind that cant be fun and especially for the fact that Fin didnt want it to begin with. I would be fine with it if they were playing but it just seems like its stressful for both dogs.

When he appraoches Fin "in that way", before Dieter annoys Fin, send Dieter away.
I set rules - I have a lot of rules. It may sound controlling, but I have well behaved dogs in return. Not always, but most of the time. Dogs will be dogs, after all.

pixie -  Good suggestion, mine always seem to instigate trouble when I am not watching.  They don't like the wrath of me so much.  Fortunately, I only see this type of behavior when I add a dog to the pack.  Happened with Ringo and now with Fauna, and it only has happened one time in each case.  I think they just like to test the waters.  Fortunately I have always heard them when something started.  Funny though, now if I want their attention I just pick up the broom.

Does that make me the wicked witch?

I get these tussels between Sniper and Xara, only theirs starts as play and occassionally escalates to a grey area between half play-half fight. I usually only have to enter the room and say a stern "Stop now!" and they both stop, once in a while Xara decides she isn't going to listen and I have to grab her collar and make her down and chill a few minutes to get the point across that I don't accept that type of "rough" play.
I know what you mean about it not really being playing and not really fighting either, but it can quickly escalate and that is something I step in to avoid.

The funny thing in our house is, even if Bo initiates it, Raz soon takes the lead (and she is 30 pounds lighter than Bo). If she's not in the mood, she will "viper" Bo and that's the end of that.

Mine have not gotten to fight mode because if they get to being too rough and oo vocal in their playing I stop it...I cue off of the vocal sounds they make...They have never gotten to the point where I need a weapon to break them up I just raise my voice and that works...
