Took three of the puppies from Halo's litter out and got them on some birds today. This is the girl I kept, Fauna, with her second find and point.

And another find and point:

And Ringo not wanting to be outdone by the puppies:

Ringo also found and pointed his first Chukar today.

I keep saying I am gonna get some birds to work with at home, but then something always comes up that either takes my time or my money...

Marcia, any nearby buildings that you can snag some ordinary pigeons from? They make great training birds....if you can build a pigeon coop...with a top and a one way door that they can go in but not go back out, they will learn to return to their coop too...

Pigeons are usually pretty cooperative too...:)

I had thought about doing pigeons...someone at my youngest son's 4-H said their father had some homing pigeons... There are pigeons around in some areas but not sure I am skilled enough to catch one, LOL...

I would have to see how to do the one way door....

I do know where I can get some quail that is maybe only 10 minutes from me...it is just a matter of getting $20 and the time and doing it....

Splat - I am using pigeons to train the puppies.  They are homing pigeons and I can use as many as I want to for free at the Hunt Club I belong too.  Quail cost $5 each, Chukkar are a bit more (not sure of the price) and Pheasant are $15 each.  So, pigeons are the best option.  I only have to pay if one is killed ($2.50).  Fauna is pointing pigeons in the picture above.

I haven't ever tried to catch pigeons because I have no where to keep them in town, but I know folks that do and have their own coop.  Here is a link to some plans for a pigeon trap: my.att.net/p/s/community.dll  Looks pretty easy to build and not very expensive.

See if you can get some homing pigeons from your friend, build a coop and you have your own training equipment. Of course, you'll need to bring your guys up to speed on quail and whatever else you all have up there once you actually start hunting...but pigeons can be very expendable. (and pigeon poles-a wonderful new thing that Terry Chandler and Ray Parham down here) are fantastic! So much better than the cardboard and twine on the pigeon's leg). I can send you some more info on that but it won't be til later this week.

Hugs to the guys!

My trainer is in the country and has a pigeon coop, and few quail coveys in comeback pens. Pigeon coop is handy if you have the space and tolerance :) . His biggest problem is the hawks sit around picking off his pigeons from time to time as they fly from the field back to the coop. Looks like two fighter planes dogfighting .

We recently moved (last week) and I saw a hawk eyeballing the pigeons. I'm glad my kids saw it too, otherwise no one would believe me. We are city dwellers, also.
At first I was taken back by what I saw and so were my kids. their eyes were wide in disbelief. My daughter couldn't even speak to get the words out. She was pointing and smacking my arm.
Life is good.

Nice!

And I had to chuckle...Bev, you and I know about the MANY synchronicities of Ringo and Tessa over the years - age, temperament, personality, training, etc. Tessa was on her first chukar a couple of months ago :) How did Ringo react? Tessa had the most intense point I've ever seen from her.

Tessa - The chukar was running on a road when Ringo first pointed it. Of course, it moved, so he moved and repointed. The chukar kept moving and he would reposition and I watched that process for a couple of minutes. Finally, the bird found some brush and hunkered down and Ringo pointed again. When I got over to them he was about to explode. So, I went in to flush the bird. No flush, but the bird was there. Turned out the bird was injured and couldn't fly. So I had my friend heel Ringo off and then took care of the injured bird. I later let him retrieve the dead bird. Poor boy worked so hard on that running bird. His points were a little tentative at first I think because he had never seen a bird that big running in the open. Once he pinned it though he had a very nice point.

Tessa's chukar was on the forest floor, just sitting there. She ran up and just slammed into a point and did not move. I thought she was pointing something really exotic, like a snake - never seen her like that.

Was she flagging on point?
