I have a year and a half year old gsp named roxy. She is struggling with pointing and finding birds and is relying more on seeing the birds and things of that nature, which i am trying to fix... My question is should i be worried? Shes a year and a half old what kind of timeline am i looking at? How much time does it usually take to teach a gsp well? Thanks for any comments.

Relax, and don't worry. Sounds like she just needs a lot of bird exposure to build up her confidence. Don't put a lot of pressure on her.

I feel that control is the main thing. If she comes when called your on the right track. The hunt part she know's. I think that when you say she is relying on seeing the bird that there is more to it then you think. She smells that bird I am sure. She just hasn't put it together yet. Get her coming and you got it licked ! Plenty of time so don't worry. One major warning !! A steady diet of hanging out with a GSP can become addictive .

Just my 2 cents.
If you are wating a hunting dog and she is not right now, forget obedience for now and give her a steady diet of large fields and birds.

cricketdog & pixie bee are absolutely correct. I misunderstood the post. I thought you just got the dog. i was affraid the dog might run if you didn't have control of her. Can you get her in birds ? Sometimes this can be the hard part. Birds can be hard to find at times.( no pun intended! ) Are you in an area where you may be able to house birds for training ? More birds and good luck.

Sounds like she's seen a ton of poor flying birds or has figured out she can get close with no repurcussions, meaning the birds fly before she can lick 'em. I'd find a way to get her on wild birds and to let the birds teach her. If you can't then it is most likely time for hard flying jumpy pen birds that bust when pushed or launchers. Checkcord the dog if you must use pen birds and stop her lightly on first scent, if she moves pop the bird. Hate to say but her breeding may be such that she hasn't much of a nose. Is she a FDSB trial bred pointer or is she an AKC pointer? Huge difference in the two.

Time frame-all dogs are different, but if the errors are yours then you're gonna need to fix the problems you have caused and not think that she'll magically figure things out.

Ya I got her when she was just a pup and she had done ok in the field. I know she has a decent nose cuz I can put her on a spot where I have seen birds and she will point for a split second and then takes off running around like a psycho so i know she can smell them she just isn't sure what to do after that. Ive been looking at buying a bird launcher and some pigeons is that a good idea? If so should I use pigeons or should i use pheasants or chuckars because thats what we will be hunting?

How about Quail ? They work well for us. They hold good and with a recall pen you can re-capture them. Kind of late in the season here where I live to hope to recover planted birds but definetly possible. If we had our pen raised birds I am sure it would work. Typicaly I do have birds on hand but currently do not. If we had some birds here and you lived near us we would have been happy to put some out for you. Max has been a spoiled little brat ! But he would not have a problem with sharing . Honestly I think that's what your supposed to do with a GSP !
