I have been reading about DNA testing on the AKC web page. I am wondering if they can do what I want with a DNA sample.

We brought in a VERY nice GSP from a shelter a week or so ago. He is very well put together and has a nose like non other. Very beautiful boy with a great tail job done on him. Which is hard to come by in Michigan. I would like to pull his DNA and see if my some mircle his parents are DNA'd with AKC and we could at least find his original breeder and then go from there. I have a hard time believing that he was purpously let go to be a stray. Just wanted to know if anyone has heard of such a thing being done?

No, they can't do that. You can submit who you think the parents are and dna from that dog and they can tell you if they are or not the parents (they mmi genomics, the vendor, not the akc) but, i don't know if they do.
Anyway the short answer is no. If the breeders or owners thought he was that valuable they would have a chip i him (I am assuming the shelter scanned for one and did not find it).
