Here's the story

We have a 9 1/2 week old German Shorthaired Pointer and we're having some trouble, mabe not problem but need some advice.

My wife and I both work, so we decided to crate train along with having a "puppy Place", which is our kitchen. The crate training is going well , but we feel like the "puppy place is screwing things up.

He is left at home for about 4 hours a day by himself as i can come home for lunch and two days a week we have different schedules. It is that reason that we decided to go with the Puppy place. We know that he cannot control his bladder yet to hold it for 4 hours so we use pee pads.

Our problem is that when we are here with him he is peeing and pooping in the house, basically in diferent places each day. he is peeing on the pads fine, but also other places. We want to move to complete house training, how old should he be before we can leave him in his crate for 4 hours and not worry that there is no way he can hold it.

Thanks.

Jeff

The rule of thumb I was given was their age in months +1 (not to exceed 8 hours).  So at 3 months, they should be okay in the crate for 4 hours.

I remember reading you can expect them to hold it for an hour for every month. So a 2 month old should be able to go about 2 hours.

I've heard both of those figures, so for 4 hours, he will need to be at least 3 months old. I think at that age we can move him to crating for 4 hours and see how it goes. Right now he really isn't gaining a lot of bladder control because he has the kitchen to move around. I am going to make the kitchen space that he is in smaller, so to act more of a den like place. he is still pretty young so I know that bladder control will come more and more as he gets older.

Bo was crate-trained from eight weeks (when we brough him home) and house-trained by 10 weeks. We ONLY used the crate. He was left for 4.5 to 5 hours from eight weeks since we both work away from home. We made sure he was absolutely empty before going to work, and first job when we got home was to let him out for a pee.

That will be the mission this weekend, to keep him in the crate for 4-5 hours and see how he does. He is sleeping through the night wuite well in his crate and goes in freely. i'm sure this will hasten the housetraining and get his bladder control up to snuff.  Thanks for the advise.

Good luck with that!

There's nothing quite so unpleasant as unwittingly walking through a puddle in your socks...  ;)

I agree with everbell. Our pup was 9 wks when we got him and had been in an outdoor kennel/run. Even when we were home he was in a crate in the living room. We have a crate that comes with a divider and we made it just big enough for him to turn around and lay down in. When we let him out of the crate he went outside first thing. When he came back in we would let him "loose" in the house but kept a very close eye on him. If we got busy doing something right back into the crate he would go. When we were at work he was in an outside kennel/run. He was housebroke in a couple of weeks. It may help that there were 2 older GSPs teaching him:) Good luck!

it was only us and the pup (and 2 cats :) and he still picked it up pretty quick. I forgot about the divider thing -- that's very important so that he doesn't pee in a different corner than he sleeps in.

Also remember to reward the pup with REALLY good treats every time he pees or poops outside. Pretty soon he'll figure out he gets nothing for indoor pees and poops, and really good treats if he does his business outside. It's amazing how quick they pick it up when rewards are involved.
