I love the snow pics with the dogs burrowed deep in the snow. Do they dig your yards up as well ? Bean digs on her walks, in certain areas...She digs trenches, dig,dig,dig...then looks at it and jumps HARD with her two front feet..dig,dig,dig, then bites the turf/dirt.... Some places are private property, and I heel her, so she doesn't have the chance to dig....Once in awhile she'll dig in our yard...THIS I DO NOT LIKE ....

I'm experimenting with a new training tactic>>    One area on our walk is a no dig zone, instead of heeling her, I let her have slack, and say "NO DIG"...been practicing quite awhile, and it has worked....So at home when I  let her out to pee...I say NO DIG....so far it has been about 75% positive...BUT>>>  with the rain and cold and snow, she usually wants back in soon.

Spring and Summer, I'm still worried about her digging. We like to leave her outside as much as possible, since we are out as well...........Although not always within eye shot !

Anyone have any good NO DIG tricks ?  I know it's only January...but I like to think ahead.

My husband spends hours during the summer moving water hoses, in attempt to keep our lawn green....I say have auto sprinklers installed...HE SAYS   " I'm retired.. it keeps me busy "

The BEAN holes in the back yard.....don't go over toooo well

PS  we have MOLES as well...fewer since Bean moved in...

I live on a pile of sand often inhabited by gophers and some type(s) of grass with big roots/crowns the dogs really like the chew in the spring. I just fenced off an area they can craterize, keep a shovel handy for filling in holes, and do all landscaping elsewhere.

If you've got Bean on a leash I think you can teach her not to dog *while you're there*, but beyond that.... rotsa ruck. Digging is a very natural and apparently satisfying doggie pastime to begin with, and then we're talking GSPs here who's prey drive has been artificially enhanced through a century+ of human breeding. If my dogs catch a critter ONCE, whatever behavior gained them the meaty is instantly engrained for life.

Enjoy your eventually mole-free yard. :P

The good news: digging can keep those front toenails worn right down to the nub on some dogs, so at least you get a slightly reduced chore... in exchange for others, granted... lol.

Sand HUH ?
We live on a rock pile !
Are your dogs allowed in the landscaped areas ?
I've HEARD, that some people have designated "DIG ZONES"
I've never seen this phenomenon....in action....
We only have an acre fenced, Bean does dig at the Tree line ( not under the fence )
But just at the bases of the trees ...cuz Squirrley Burley lives there
I never reprimand that digging.. ( I don't care & it's not LAWN )
In my dream world...that is OUR DESIGNATED DIG ZONE lol
In the rain & ick of winter...our biggest concern is Bean coming back in the house with MUD drenched
paws......
We have the BEAN ZONE ( costco pet blankie ) at the back door
She comes in and sits immediatley.....On the blankie
Then we towel her down, wipe the paws, and let her RIP !!!!
My guess is >>> She likes the towel rub down...that's why she cooperates
I know I'd like a massage every time I came back in the house .... ROFLMAO

The dogs are almost always in their fenced yard. All current non native plant life is in a bed next to the house OUTSIDE the fence. Every once in a while I'll let a dog out to run around, but only closely supervised since we don't have the whole 3 acres fenced and only when I'm sure the ticks have died back.

My dog has a collection of things that he has found in the yard (  large sticks, gardening gloves,   balls, and other strange items) which he keeps in one of his 3 digging spots.  Luckily we have not landscaped our pretty large backyard yet since my husband is restoring a boat, but I am going to have trouble with this as well.  It is funny to look at the things he is hoarding though... he likes pulling weeds as well...   GSPs can be trouble , but they are worth it!!!

Here is Jackson in one of his digging spots looking extremely happy to be in the dirt... I think we should have named him Linus!!

When you clean poop from the yard, bury it in the holes that they dig.

They will quit digging there. Although they may just move to a different spot

I've always thought that they were diggin in the snow to capture the field mice that burrow under the snow. At least that's been my expereince -- I just wish they wouldn't bring the wounded mice indoors!

It's not the digging in the snow that's the trouble it's digging up the lawn. Everytime I have caught mine digging anywhere snow or dirt, they have either caught a mouse, mole, vole, or gopher. Last year I looked for Hunter, he was out in the field and I could literally only see his butt and tail. Just as I walked out to him(as he wasn't hearing me) out he came tossing a gopher up in the air. I think it was the one getting in my garden.
That's one word of caution to watch out if you or someone else uses poison for rodents. Bad things would happen I imagine.
I really don't know any other way to break them because if there is prey they are going after it.
