Hi i have a 12 week old GSP male have only had him a couple days but he doesn't seem interested in a wing or anything to do with a dummy is this something that i should be worried about? i have never had a pointer before i have always just trained coon hounds so this is new to me... should he be pointing already or will that come in time? thank you for all your time

Why would he point a wing or a dummy? It's not a bird. Remember these dogs point with their noses, or at least they should.

Get him on real birds and see what happens, then worry

How about a picture?

Find someone with some good flying pen quail or pigeons. Take a pigeon by the wing and tease him with it, get him excited, then toss the bird for him to chase. He'll get fired up even if you have to repeat this process. For introduction I don't like the idea of free released or planted birds, one wing to the face and you could have a birdshy dog. Get him to where he wants to attack them and you've got something. If he shows NO interest, tie a pigeon's wings and let him maul it. He will get fired up if his breeding is right. Get him chasing birds like crazy and then lightly plant a bird for him to point. LIGHTLY planted. Or, free release some good flyers and let him point, bump, chase. Then, on to wild birds if you have access. He won't catch them and he'll learn to hunt!!

Alright i got him on some quail and he went crazy and loved them! and got him fired up and eventually planted some in the open and let him hunt for them and i could tell he was really birdy and didn't stop untill he found he bird but the quail never fly he always catches them... my question being should i not let him catch them will that teach bad habbits? and he doesn't point i have been working with him and the whoa command but he points then pounces

Then it's time for pigeons so that they go up and stay up and he stops being able to catch. My recommendation is to look up Perfection Kennels and order their "Perfect Start" videos and follow their protocol. It is NOT a crisis that he's caught a few, but I would do all you can to keep that from continuing to happen or he will stop pointing.

Catching a bird or two isn't a problem, but consistently catching can be. Any dog that is put on wild birds may bump and chase the first covey or two, or ten. However, he soon learns he can't catch them and learns to hold point on his own. Poor flying birds causes several problems, boredom, cease of point, desire to look at birds and not use their nose, flagging, etc. Dogs have to learn to use their noses, to stop the second they get scent, not to keep barging until they can see the bird. Many don't have wild birds, so a wild bird situation needs to be imitated. Very lightly dizzied pigeons are close as they will flush if crowded. Hard flying jumpy quail raised properly free released, NOT planted, will flush somewhat wild. If the only birds you have access to are all poor flyers, then don't use them. Far better for a dog to not see birds than to catch them.

You mention the whoa command. Whoa and birds have nothing to do with each other. Whoa is taught off birds. A dog MUST learn to point and hold on his own, then whoa is enforced, then he is taught that birds mean whoa. Whoaing a dog to stop instead of him pointing will cause him to stand his birds with little if any style. Let the dog learn to hunt, to be independent, and bold in his search, and work on his pointing and use of his nose with good birds.
