Buddy had a lump appear on his left side right at his last rib.  Grew within a week, went to the vet, all tests came back no cancer but we were puzzled.  Vet thinks his body may be rejecteding a foreign object of some sort, deep thorn, they didn't find anything.  The other night the lump actually burst open, he's doing great, some pain meds and alot of antibiotics.  He was also running a fever.  No stitches, it is closing and healing on its own.

My dog, Sunshine, had a lump right where his ribs and stomach met. It grew for about 9 months. Still had fur on it. I had the vet look at it, took x-rays. Vet offered to take a sample out of it and send it to a lab to see if cancer. Well, Sunshine started licking it and the hair came off. I finally had the vet cut it out/off. Turns out the vet found a grass seed in it. That's what caused the lump. Vet said it was good we caught it before it worked completely through the skin. I still have it in a little plastic bag. I think it was an oat seed. I had grown some spring oats prior to the lump.
An imbedded thorn or something could very well have caused Buddy's lump. Hopefully it came out during the surgery.
That is a nasty looking lump.

It happend once before, antibiotics made it go away, this time it came back very aggresive. That is not a surgery pic, thats how it ended up, vet just cleaned it up. it has no affect on how he's been acting, he's just as happy and crazy as usual. He's a tough doggy. Oh yes, we woke up one morning last week and I did freak out, headed straight to the vet and took 2 days off work to stay with him and make sure he was okay. I'd say the wound was 4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches deep. I think I could see his rib in there thru the tissue. It is healing well, know only about 1 inch long and almost fill in to the surface.

Wow, that looks horrific. I would have reacted the same way you did. Hope it heals and doesn't come back.

What did the vet tell you to do to dress and clean the wound, and is he wearing a cone to keep from ripping off the dressing?

Treatment was antibiotics and flush with water 3 times a day, no dressing, it's healing great. The vet gave me a cone but I didn't need it, Buddy kinda licked on it alittle after the rinses then left it alone. At first he was wearing an old t-shirt to keep it covered and to keep him from getting at it. I think he like wearing a t-shrit, he'd run right over and let me put it on.

It could be a grass awn. We have a big problem out here with them. Certain types of these seeds will penetrate the skin or get in around the eyes and cause death or blindness. After each session its important to do a check of your dog's body and check under his eyelids and remove any seeds. There was an article last year in PDJ or Gun Dog Mag about them but I don't remember which month.
