I just rescued a GSP from and animal shelter. Vet thinks he is between 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old. They did not know any background on him as he was found rather than given to a shelter. It has only been one day so right now trying to get him to recognize his name and bond with me and my wife. What are some tips to begin training this older dog. He acts like he might have had some training but is not real obedient at the moment. He is very loving and stays close right now. Would eventually like to use him as a hunting dog if he shows the potential.

Right now I would work on basic obedience with him and not put a lot of pressure on him until he starts settling into his new home. Lots of positive reinforcement would probably work well too. How about posting some pictures of your new pup. And welcome to the forum and thanks for rescuing this boy.

Right now I would just relax and have fun with him for a few weeks until he adapts to his new environment. I wouldn't let him off leash or free outside a fenced in area for a least a couple weeks just to make sure he's bonded to you and doesn't take off. Have fun and enjoy.

Give him a month plus to bond and feel acclimated. Then, get him on birds, let him chase pigeons and have fun. If he is bird crazy then half the battle is won. He needs to have confidence and independence plus the desire and innate pointing ability to become an effective hunting companion. I've seen far too many show line dogs who had NO desire, no speed, no indepenence, and no point in them. If the dog is like those, then feel good about rescuing a dog that would have been put down and know you now should have a great pet. You did a great thing. If the dog has the innate desire, then find a good pro or amateur in your area who is willing to help guide you. This will cut your learning curve by a ton!!!!
