Dexter is 2 and his 2yr script for Heart Guard ran out. The vet is calling wanting $55 to prescribe more then charge about $15-20 more than online sellers. They may match online $ but insist I need the script and cannot get it without one. Do all you owners get exam/script apts or just reorder on the net?

yes you need the prescription to renew.. Part of the $55 is testing to make sure they DON'T have heartworms. Which is just as important as giving them...

One thing I have been learning about the online sellers... They don't always give you what you think you are getting... They are notorious for sending out counterfeit meds that are missing the active ingredient.

The one thing that is important to understand about buying meds from the online suppliers is that they don't guarantee anything. My cousin's Welshie got roundworm and whipworm and when I asked her if he was on a monthly preventative, she said yes, Interceptor. I told her that both of those intestinal parasites were supposed to be covered by Interceptor and when she asked her vet, who she had gotten it from, they said yes and contacted the maker of Interceptor. In the end, the company paid for all of the testing and treatment for the worms that he got while taking Interceptor. No drug is 100% preventative, so things do happen. In the end she saved a couple hundred dollars because she had purchased it through her vet.

I've heard from people that the meds arrived not in the original package but rather repacked in bubble wrap...who knows what it really is, where it came from and what's in it. I am always hurting for money but that is not an area I would want to save.

Re prescription - it's important to have the dog tested first as you shouldn't give heartworm meds to a dog with heartworms.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]
