I have finally settled down in a new home and decided to replace the void my last gsp left when she passed 7 years ago.
I am looking for a puppy with health certs on eyes, hips (min ofa good), heart, etc. Must have a good temperment and high intellegence.
My one preferance would be liver roan coloration. (if possible, but not a deal breaker for the right dog) I do not have much of a preference between a male and female. The personality and intellegence of the dog is more important to me.
I am willing to travel up to 6 hours each way. (I am 30 min from philadelphia) I don't want to ship as I feel that is too stressful on them and I would prefer to meet the dog first.
My budget is up to $1000 depending on the quality of the bloodline.
Thanks. |

I did speak with nobelle, but he would only like his dogs to go to a hunting family. He referred me to a woman in connecticut, who I have emailed.
I did not find honey run shorthairs in my searching.
Zodiakgsps I got your pm. Thanks.

Forget HoneyRun, she prefers hunting homes also. You will often find this preference when you contact hunters who are breeders. Good luck with your search.Let us know how it turns out. |

mikeb22,
are you looking for pet quality? If you are have you checked out the NJ rescue?
You may get a pup.
It just dawned on me - did you say you just move into a new home?
You are brave for wanting a puppy! Hope you didn't put down rugs.

Hi,
I'm also in NJ and have been looking for some time. I have been in touch with a number of breeders and have received lots of help from the EGSPC (Eastern German Shorthaired Pointer Club). Actually, EGSPC Rescue just contacted me about a week ago, they have a 4 month old female they need to re-home (owners did not realize the amount of time/work a puppy requires). I did not get her because I just recently started a new job and could not take any time off. I will get my pup in a few weeks when it is easier to take off a few days.
Another option that may work for you is the link below. The litter was just born last Thursday (3/11/10) in Long Island. There were 5 males and 4 females. The sire is Ch. Crystal's Up Close N' Personal MH, NRD, NA I, UT I 201 and the Dam is Top Gun Diamond Lilly MH UT I . Lilly's owner is a very nice guy named Mike. I went out to meet them a few weeks before the pups were born and I was impressed with her temperment, very calm and friendly. I was not able to meet Josh (Sire) because he is a bit far from me but I've heard nothing but good things about him. I will be getting a pup from this litter.

Also, Panamint GSP's in Westchster is expecting a litter this weekend, Up N' Adam's just had a litter two weeks ago and Buck Hollow is expecting one in early April.
I hope all this helps, best of luck to you. |

Thank you to everyone that helped me. I just found a 1 year old boy near me. The breeder bought him back from an older woman who could not keep him anymore.
He is very intelligent and has a lot of desirable traits. He is ofa excellent for his hips and has all the usual vet clearances. He seems to be a very multipurpose dog. He is very showable, gamey, and loving. I think I hit the jackpot with him. |

pixie is right. He can't be OFA Excellent since he is under 2 years old. Heck, his growth plates aren't even closed yet. He might have a preliminary OFA rating, but OFA will not give a permanent rating on hips or elbows until he is 2 YO. Here is a link to the OFA website where if you know the dogs registered name or registration number you can look the dog up and see his clearances (assuming the breeder/owner has actually filed them with OFA).
www.offa.org/
The dog could still have clearances OFA prelim, CERF, Cardiac, CD, etc and the owner/breeder may not have filed them. In which case ask to see the cerficates. It would not be that unusual for a dog a year old not to have any clearances yet especially if the dog is not going to be used in breeding. So in that case you want to look at the parents clearances. At a minimum I look for Hips, Cardiac and CERF. Some folks with GSPs also do Elbows, CD, Thyroid too. |

Thank you for correcting me, I think I just misspoke on what I heard. A lot was going on. I went over the certs and both parents are ofa excellent for hips. That must have been what she had said, there was a lot of info to take in while we were meeting him.
There are a lot of records on both parents side on the ofa site, a lot more than I have normally seen with many of the records I have seen. Are they all managed by the breeders?
Also, the breeder did ask to freeze his sperm at her expense and if we are interested in co-ownership. She really wants us to show off his versatility. |

It sounds like you have found a good breeder. I would inquire closely into the terms of the co-ownership. What does it mean for you and for the breeder? I personally don't like co-ownerships for the most part as they can lead to issues and disagreements. So, just understand what you are getting into with a co-ownership. As for the frozen sperm that is not unusual if a breeder thinks a dog has potential and may want to use that dog in there breeding program once they see how the dog turns out. The owners/breeders of the sire and dam would get their dogs health checks done and submitted to OFA. Look carefully at the certs on the OFA website because they post both good and bad. That said it sounds like you have a good breeder. OFA Excellent hips in both parents is great, but I would also look for Cardiac and CERF (eyes and the CERF is done yearly) at a minimum. Can you post some pictures of the dog you are thinking about? |

Sorry for the curt post but the site has been giving me problems today.TB has given you some good advice. You seem to have hit the jack pot. Nice! I would be careful of co-ownership. Ask around if anyone knows the breeder and you will hear the good, the bad and the ugly and then you can make your decision about co-ownership. |

| Looks like a very nice dog. He looks a little tense in his stacked pictures, but he is still young. Otherwise, he looks well put together. If you want to PM me on the kennel, I will tell you if I know of it. I don't want to do that though on the public forum. |

Here are the ofa records for the parents
offa.org/display.html?appnum=1296101#animal
offa.org/display.html?appnum=1294863#animal
His has such a good temperament and I am really excited. The breeder teaches a class near my house and invited us to come watch her teach the advanced training and confirmation class.
I don't know what issues would come up with the co-ownership. Are there any good places to read about that. I also should probably start a new thread as this one is in the wtb area. |

| Hey Mike,
Glad you found a dog, that's Ringo right? I really would have loved to have adopted him but the timing just didn't work for us. I met his breeder at an EGSPC event earlier this year and she was very nice. Actually, she has your dogs' sister, Lucy. Works out nicely that she teaches classes near you, maybe you can get them together to play. Anyhow, best of luck to you and since we're both in Jersey maybe I'll see you at some events.

Mike - Go watch the class. You will learn about conformation (conforms to the standard, not confirm). Not to worry allot of folks make the confirm vs conform mistake. Each co-ownership is different. Ask the breeder what she expects out of the co-ownership and then decide if you are willing to agree to her expectations. Those expectations are what she will do, what she expects you to do, and what happens if someone doesn't live up to those expectations. Good luck! |

Yeah it's ringo. The breeder has been wonderful and has make everything such a great expereince. She has done way more than I ever expected. You can tell she loves her dogs.
After watching him work at conformation class yesterday I know he is going to be a great dog. I also met lucy yesterday and she is a little ball of energy. I am sure we will see you around. Thank you to everyone that has been helping me. I have been out of the dog world for 8 years, so I feel like I am learning everything again.
