Call me crazy but i like my dogs to have nice white clean teeth.

My Brittany is about 3, doesn't really get into chewing on dog toys and or anything but for the most part his teeth stay pretty nice.

My GSP on the other hand (near 2) is more into chewing on kongs and such has teeth that are difficult to keep clean.

Both dogs eat the same food. Purina Pro Plan Performance Formula...though im in the process of changing over to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul as its a more holistic food.  Not much in the way for treats for them and no table scraps ever.

Okay all that said every now and then i will get out a little took i have and chip off heavy plaque but this does little for the areas that are starting to look soiled.  As puppies they would let me brush...bit more difficult with 45 and 60lb dogs now.

All that said i want them to have nice white teeth.  Other than having them put under at the vet is there anything i can do at home to get them white and keep them white.  Any good chew toys or tooth pastes that i can scrub with?

We give a raw hide2-3 times a year. I can't find antlers in the stores and there is no way we're going to find them in the wild, but I would give these over rawhides.

It's a downfall to bagged food.

Well they do get a raw hide 1 or 2 times yearly as well....most of the time they swipe it at the dog store or the manager give them a treat.

Just seems like a need a paste with something in it to get rid of the stains.

Thanks
Bob

I know for my teeth i use a mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Might want to check with the vet to see if either of those could be harmful to a dog.

Bo and Razzie get marrow bones every night (i keep re-stuffing them for about 2 to 3 weeks with rollover) and that keeps their teeth nice and white.

I have been told by dentist that baking soda is a no no for brushing your teeth as its abrasive.

Peroxide problem might be its what is used to make the dog vomitt in the event they eat something they were not suppose to.

hmmm hmmm hmmm dang it

I give my dogs bones and deer antlers and they all have nice white teeth. They get the antlers all the time as they are in their toy box. Bones they usually get on nice days outside as they tend to be greasy. Every once in a while I have to use a dental tool on some of the front teeth, but that is pretty rare. I also brush their teeth with doggy toothpaste and a toothbrush whenever they get groomed. Belle never has any build up. Halo I have to watch a bit as she is not as big a chewer as Belle. Ringo is also a chewer and his back teeth are gorgeous, but he does get a little build up that I have to clean off with a dental tool on his front teeth. I am picky about the teeth too. I want them to have beautiful pearly whites when the judge examines them in the show ring.

Nice topic.  I always wondered the 4 GSP's that I have had always had such white teeth.  My golden and two labs always had buildup at the gums.  Always thought it was because they have always had crunchy treats and hard food...we maybe a few nibbles of steak.

Doggy dentures! Has anyone seen that commercial? Do dentastix work? The ingredients don't look great.

I am not too fond of the dental chews. They are expensive and my dogs go through them so quickly. They don't seem to do any good. I find the bones and deer antlers work better.

I have used rawhides in the past but have read so much recently about them being processed with all sorts of chemicals as well as processing not really being regulated (especially on those made in China), I have been looking for other options. I have heard many of you recommend deer antlers but can't find them locally. I have tried bully sticks. Ally loves them but they are expensive and don't last more than a few minutes. I recently got her a bull knuckle bone. It is big and heavy. So far she has just licked on it and played with it...hiding it all over the house. Does anyone give their dogs bull knuckle bones? Also...any other natural options besides rawhides for chewing and keeping teeth clean? Any information would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

We don't have our GSP yet, but our Corgi really like knuckle bones. I haven't noticed that they have helped his teeth a lot but they do some. We don't give them very often because we buy them from the meat locker and they leave blood and marrow all over the place.

Here is a link to where I buy my anters.  I usually get the XL or XXL.  If you buy 5  or more they have discount codes for 5% and up off. I buy here because their antlers are nice and clean and are pretty consistent size wise.  My dogs love these more than bones.

Thank you for the link.  I just sent it out to my friends and pet sitting clients.  Great site!
