Hi. This is my first post here but I'm sure not my last. We get our puppy Friday and will probably need lots of advice in the future. She won't be our first puppy but our first full GSP. We do have a GSP (gasp!!!!!) Lab mix and he is a great dog. For a mommas boy. LOL So I got to pick out daddys girl so we could spend some time chasing some birds. I'll write some more after we pick her up. With a 5 hr drive ahead of us I am sure we will have a bit to talk about.

Congrats on your new GSP Pup. Don't gasp at a Lab mix. Sometimes they are the best dogs. We had a Chese/lab mix for 13 years and she was a real honey. Have a safe 5 hour drive back home. Good luck and welcome to the GSP world of adventure!!!!

Congratulations. And with a 5 hour drive you will have something to tlak about. When we picked ours up she was so snuggly that I decided to hold her on the way home instead of putting her in the crate. About half an hour into the drive she started to make these retching, gagging sounds. "Stop the car! Stop the car!" Husband always asks questions first and reacts last. Puppy vomited all over my shirt. Puppy gets put in kennel in the back of the van. About 15 minutes later a stong recognizible smell wafts forward from the rear of the van. When we got home we discovered that we now had a German Sh*thaired Pointer. She was huddled in the far end of the crate and would not even look at us. I scooped her up in a towel, put her in the sink and gave her her first bath. When I wrapped her in a towel and cuddled her that little wet head was right against my neck and we have been best friends ever since. Your adventure is just starting. They are the most lovable goofy dogs you will ever own.

The breeder just emailed that he took her for a ride yesterday and she got sick. It was on a winding road that we wont go on though. Our mix dog, Lickerish, has many of the traits that your dogs show. The laying on us, the getting comfy any way he can and laying all sprawled out in wierd positions, being really smart. Nothing like my friends lab. Can't wait to see how great Cocoa is going to be.

Congrats on your new puppy. Welcome to the site and all it's info. Lots and Lots of help here. They have been a blessing to me!
When my wife picked up Hunter for me, he had never been out of his kennel. He got carsick out of both ends! She got home and said he's in the back. OMG was that nasty. I reached in and pulled out a soaking wet GSP. Well it didn't look or smell very promising! Right into the bathtub and POOF there's my boy. None of our other GSP get sick in the car. Must've just been a puppy thing. Good luck!

*laughs* I can relate to the 5hr drive...when I rescued my last GSP I drove 6 1/2 hrs to pick him up! He was full grown, overweight, and I was squashed in the back of a small car with him (thankfully I had company on the trip willing to do the driving) When I got him in shape he still weighed around 70lbs...he was probably more like 80 or more when I got him *laughs*. All in all though he was a really good traveler, though I think by the end of the trip he was ready for wiggle room (he kept getting up and trying to lay down again, and sometimes slipping off the seat!)

Well our trip was pretty uneventfull. 3 potty breaks and a few trips to the front seat and the rest was puppy nap time. She is a hoot when she starts to play with our other dogs. The first night after the ride home was 2 hrs of hard hard play. Finally had to put her on the puppy bed to get her away from the others and she conked out for about 5 hrs. Hasn't shown the normal seperation crying that most go through. I guess it's because she has the other dogs to be around.  They seemed to tolerate her the first couple of days better than yesterday. Actually saw them try to hide from her when they wanted to nap. LOL. Been pretty busy with the honey do list so I will post a pic when I remember to.

Congrats on the new addition!!! GSP's are the best. GSP/Lab crosses are pretty cool too, that's the only way I would get a lab! There are a lot of them in the sport of dockjumping and all I have seen doing it have been quite good at it too. I've heard they are excellent for hunting as well.
