What are the opinions of picking up a pup, do think there's any advantages or disadvantages in picking one up at 7 weeks or 8 weeks.

I have heard that the longer they stay with the litter the more well rounded in dog behaviors, like nippiness and pack order and such things (actually I think someone posted about it on this forum somewhere)...some think 10 weeks is best...but I have known some to get them at 6 weeks...

I have the option of 7 weeks or 8 weeks, I told the breeder I would rather pick up at 8 weeks for reasons you have mentioned. I got Buddy at 10 weeks, seemed to work out good?

I'd go with 8 weeks over 7 if those are the only options. I am one that prefers closer to 9-10 weeks. I like them to have that extra time with mom and their littermates.

JMO: I don't agree with the old adages about HAVING to bring home a pup at exactly XX days/weeks. Well bred pups should be temperamentally flexible, and I've seen all kinds of great beginnings from 7 weeks to 4 or 5 months... Beyond that you're getting into The Teenage Phase, which can be dealt with successfully but is an extra challenge to a new owner. I'm also sincerely grateful every pup we've brought home has had one or more adults around to keep them in line, but I realize not everyone has this luxury, and in that case I lean towards keeping them with the litter a little longer.

Other reasons to hold off would be your work schedule or having young kids in the house. Buying 2 or 3 less weeks of non-existent bladder capacity plus just being a little more physically developed (i.e. sturdier) before throwing them into The Family Zoo is probably a good thing!

I agree with MegCs last post. I have gotten puppies from 7 weeks and up (not all shorthairs). I really have not seen a significant difference in the development or the abilities of the various dogs. I would say temperament and personality play a bigger role. I too like having adult dogs around to show the new pup the ropes and the boundaries. When I start training too, I will have my pup watch the training sessions with my older dogs and then work with them. They learn from watching and imitation just like humans do.

Boy aint that the truth! That's actually what I've done to harness break pups... let them watch us make a couple passes with the cart or scooter with the older dog(s) and make a HUGE deal over how super great and exciting it all is while ignoring pupalupagus. Usually after a couple minutes of that, junior is screaming and lunging to join us.... they don't know WHY, but they're 100% convinced they're missing something and want in on the action- lol!

You hit the nail on the head MegC. LOL I used that methodology the other night at the training center. Ringo was in a wire crate on the floor while I worked Halo. You should have heard the strange talking that came from his direction. By the time he got out he couldn't work hard enough to please me. That is one of the pluses of having multiple dogs.

Thanks for the input, I feel basically the same as you all, this is what was waying on my mind. Although the breeder said 7 weeks and I requested 8 weeks, 7th week falls on a Sunday, my son is off school on Friday and Monday and was thinking of making a long weekend getaway/roadtrip. In any event the pup will be with the litter for really an additional 6 days.

I wouldn't weigh the outcome of a pup on whether or not it stayed with the breeder for 7, 8 weeks or 10 weeks. A lot depends on if the litter will be together in the extra time but in more so, does the breeder do anything with the pups in that time.
I really like the idea of making along weekend out it. It will make for a memorable experience.
Don't forget to take pictures.
And to post them.
