I have had my shorthair, Roxie since the fall of 2003, when she was 6 weeks old.  In April, after the loss of an older shorthair due to old age, Roxie started to drag her hind legs.  She has always been kind of a "nervous" dog, and is very hyper at times, but almost always obeys.  She, now, can not control her bowels and sometimes her jaw chatters.  I have to keep both dogs, (a labrador also) in the garage, due to Roxie's bowels and her dependence on Juneau, the lab. (She cries when Juneau is gone).  I have looked up possible symptoms on the internet, and have found a few possible answers, but am still unsure if it's correct or not.  I have taken her to two seperate vets, had her x-rayed, stools, blood, etc and they both want me to take her to a specialist in a neighboring town.  I would love to do this, and am saving up money to do it, but I can't financially do this as they have told me it could cost  "thousands" and even then, there is no certainty.

She can not control her bowels, and I take her out constantly, but she will urinate and deficate  while walking, and her hind legs will occasionally give way at any certain time.   It happens most when she runs (she is like a cheetah or a greyhound fast) and she falls down, but bounces back up and sometimes falls again.  It doesn't seem to bother her too much, as she is very playful.

She also possibly has hotspots? or some sort of abrasions on her coat, perhaps from the kennel?  I notice her jaw chatters too, and up until late, it hasn't been cold enough for me to believe that's what it could be.

Degenerative Myelopathy sounds like the symptoms, but I notice it generally happens to other dogs (not always the case) and in breeds other than the GSP.  The two vets, have yet to see anything in the x-rays and say she has a variety of symptoms for different things, but they can not pinpoint it to a specific one.  She has always been sort of "afraid" of things, and has been this way since I first got her.  So here I sit on a Friday night at 1:30 a.m. looking for answers, and hoping someone with knowledge or advice reads this soon.  I am trying my best to get enough money, but not sure I can do so.  Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Here is a pic of Roxie:

My parents dog went through this sort of thing. Her problem was arthritis. And then eventualy it became so bad that we had to lift her hind legs for her to go outside and she also started going all overherself. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for. It probably is something to do with her back and that is VERY costly to fix with no garauntee of a good outcome.
When is your appointment with the specialist?

Hi, I'm reading your tale, and thinking that different parts of it sound familiar. I've gone through the falling, particularly with older dogs, and the incontinence, etc. with spayed bitches. It doesn't sound as if any of these things apply in your case, and I'd be wary of self-diagnosis or reading all the possibilities. If you are anything like I am, I get into reading about possibilities and turn into the world's biggest doggie hypochodriac you've ever seen.

Are you writing down each time an episode occurs ? Just a simple notation, time of day, what happened, etc., can be of benefit down the line when you do get into a diagnosis. There's always a possibility that she is having focal seizures, where they briefly lose control of different parts of the body. Other than that, everything seems normal up to and following it. This could present as incontinence, falling, even a blink of an eye that looks wrong. Those things don't show up on radiographs, only an MRI or CAT scan can show a lesion within the spinal cord or brain.

You may want to check out the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association online. You can google it, and search for a vet within a close area. One of my vets is both a DVM and also a Veterinary Chiropractor and Acupuncturist. I cannot begin to tell you how much all of my senior dogs have enjoyed her care, and each of my show dogs has a very affordable visit prior to a show or trial. There are many holistic remedies that may also benefit your girl and are also affordable until you can afford the consults. You might also want to have your vets check with local vet schools to see if there is a neurology clinic or if they have a staff neurologist.

It does sound neurological, but could be as simple as a pinched nerve and getting all panicky over that doesn't help you or your girl. Whatever your outcome, know that many of the folks on this board have been through much of the same and have some good suggestions for you. Please let me know if I can help, tho I'm not a vet (I read a lot-LOL!)

I had a rescue shorthair that had distemper and immune problems that had a lot of the same symptoms. Her back legs gave out when she was a puppy
and then again when she was about 13. The vet thought that she might have had a pituitary tumor when she was older but we decided not to put
her through a lot of tests and medications when her quality of life was not good. Can you get in touch with the breeder of your dog. That required
a lot of detective work on our part when she was a pup but led us to a lot of answers. Six weeks old seems really young to let a pup go on their own.
