not going to breed our dog who will be 1yr old in March.

When he's with other dogs the humping is OUT OF CONTROL.

1) any advise on how to discourage this?  methods?

2) what is the best age for allowing their hormones to take their effect on his phsyic (and avoid making him "leggie")?   but no letting the humping drive continue on and on...?

Your pup is hitting puberty, they are worse at that age, does not last forever. I just give them a tap and No or Ahhh and discourage it.  I would not neuter until the dog is fully mature or between a yr and 2.

I have a male that is 1.5 YO and I will not be neutering him as I plan on showing him in conformation. He has not been bad about the humping. I have two female GSPs too (one spayed and one not). When he tries to hump either one of them they usually correct him, but if not I do exactly what snips does.

Personally, I would wait until he is at least a year to a year and a half old before neutering. Gives them a chance to mature completely.

Just an FYI...the humping may not stop just because you neuter. Humping is frequently not about sex. I have two half-brothers (cavaliers, not gsps, and one lives with my ex) who hump each other regularly. It's part of their play routine. Now, they are intact, but my friend has an irish terrier who is neutered, and when he gets overstimulated, he humps. He humps people and he humps dogs.

Now that your dog has gotten practice, he may still do that. So if you see it, remove him from that situation and then distract and give him something else to do.

I've seen more humping from the female dogs in my house than any of my boys. Demonstrated by my little ACD:

Yes just about every vet I have ever talked to wants you to neuter/spay at 6 months.  Even my vet who knows we do performance events said I should spay Java, I said no way.  I plan on doing conformation, but even if I was not doing conformation I would wait.  It seems that there are alot of indications if you spay before they are mature they will get leggy stretching those tendons which could cause issues later on.

And yes, the females hump too.  Somewhat it is dominance.  My labs were bad trying to hump.  My older GSP has never humped and will absolutely not allow it from anyone else.  She keeps everyone in line about it.  Perhaps I could loan her out to you.  Just kidding.  I love that dog too much to send her anywhere but my house.

None of my dogs hump, but they have all tried it somewhere along the way. I don't allow the behavior as it more often than not is a dominance play as opposed to something sexual. I would say the only time it is sexual is when there is a bitch in season and then males (especially younger ones) regardless of whether they are neutered will try to hump the bitch.

My friend's dog is not only humping other dogs but my friends legs as well. It's just a normal behavior.

German Shorthaired Pointer training is something I need to put in my mind and heart to make it successful.
