My girlfriend and I recently got a gsp pup. We had been thinking a long time about what breed of dog would be right for us. I had been doing some online research and fell upon some pictures of gsp's and we immediately fell in love with the breed. Truth be told I had never seen a gsp, and quite frankly, we had both agreed it was the cutest dog breed we had ever seen. I started doing some research. I went to the pretty basic "about the breed" sites and learned they were hunters, high energy, faithful and spirited companions. I am not a hunter but had read that these dogs can make good house pets for active lifestyles. We are quite active as we enjoy hiking, camping, and various other outdoor activities. We got our pup, Jäger, from a somewhat local breeder. Within the first hour with our new pup, we knew we had made the right choice. Since then I have continued to do research, delving deeper into forums such as these, trying to find things to keep my active bundle of joy busy. Since getting him we have already started obedience classes and plan to do some other training classes with him. This site has quickly become one of my favorite resources and I enjoy browsing through the forums. I was hoping for some suggestions on activities I can do with my pup, who is now almost 18 weeks. Again being a non hunter(nothing against it, just wasn't brought up around it to know much about it other then shooting game), I was hoping I could get your suggestions. Thanks in advance! |

I started out in GSPs as a non-hunter as well. I wanted a hiking companion and a best friend. I now have three shorthairs (that is a warning, you can never have just one). I do obedience, conformation, agility, hunt tests, field trials, flyball , biking, and hiking. When I started I was focused on obedience competition and hiking. Since I love doing different things with my dog I just keep branching out and trying new things. Shorthairs are perfect for that since they are so versatile. I still have not actually taken up hunting, but I am training (with the help of pro trainer) my male to hunt. I hope to take my first hunting trip next fall. I forgot to mention my dogs all love to swim as well. Someday I hope to try dock diving as well. There are some on this forum who do that. Others do mushing and skijoring. I would love to try those too, but not enough snow in Texas (I do biking instead). LOL I should also mention carting here too, although I have not tried that either. Mine also love frisbee and just playing retrieve games. Which takes me to tracking. Another thing I would like to try when I get some time. If I could only retire and play with my dogs, life would be great, but then that job lets me play with my dogs. Most of all, have fun with your pup. Trust me he will be happy as long as he is with you and doing what you are doing. Can't wait to see pictures and welcome to the forum. |

Welcome, and yes, we need some photos! I got my first GSP last year and love her! Funnest dog I have ever had, but also trying at times. You just need to develop a routine with activities that best suits your dog. I have never hunted either but after watching Tessa move through an open field I quickly realized that this is what she's all about, so I contacted the local NAVHDA chapter and they recommended some books and invited me to their training day and this is how I got hooked. I strongly recommend you look into joining NAVHDA or breed club and work your dog in that venue even if you never intend to hunt. It will increase your bond, is yet another fun activity, your dog will absolutely love it, and I bet you will too. |

I too got my first GSP last year. I do a lot of obedience work but have never done bird work. On the advice of a friend I joined NAVHDA. It was the best decision I ever made. Here is the main site and from there you can find local chapters. http://www.navhda.org/ I never thought i would enjoy hunting but watching these dogs do what they are bred to do is incredible and what a nice group of people. Stop by a training day and see what it is all about! And yes, swimming! My dog is like a fish! Have fun! |

After giving the matter a lot of consideration, I have come to the conclusion that GSP puppies are the cutest in the world. |
