This article just came out about a study looking at the effect of ovaries on longevity.  Since to spay or not to spay has come up for discussion numerous times on this forum I thought I would share this with you guys.

Alot more factors include in life style of a dog to determine longevity. Chese/Lab, Snickers, lg breed, spaded at 7 months lived 13 yrs and  4 months,  Of course first male GSP, Poge neutered at 9 yrs lived 15 yrs and 8 months. Both dogs lived with good diet as  in house companion dogs with at least 2- 45 minute off leash walks a day. Very interesting article though. I had one friend whose fox terrier had cancer of uterus at 6 yrs and Vet told her if spaded earlier in life would have avoided this kind of cancer. So at that point I was relieved Snickers was spaded so I didnot have to worry about her coming down with that complication.

Interesting research but probably needs to be looked at more...I think genetics have more to do with longivity than ovaries...had a dog that was spayed at 6 months and died at 14 years of old age. Her mother was spayed at around 6 years and lived 14 years when she died of cancer. Father (intact) also lived 14 years and died of cancer. Which of course proves nothing :)

But I am all for any research that looks into the spay/neuter issue as I don't believe that early spay/neuter is all it's trumped up to be healthwise.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]

I also found this article interesting but take research like this with a grain of salt. Until they can take a mirror image of a dog or any living being and run the research it is all a guess. Genetics plays a huge part of it.

EX: This is from the litter we got our last boxer from. Our boxer was spayed at 6 months died at 5yrs, her litter mate was intact died at 4yrs old, another one spayed at 6 months lived to 12yrs (old for a boxer), another one intact lived to 10yrs.

This is just my own thoughts - which can also be taken with a grain of salt :-)
