Joey's belly is super soft and pink with no hair from about halfway down her stomach to her butt. I though I had read on here that normally GSPs have longer hair on their bellies. It feels like babys skin. Is that normal? will it change as she grows?

Bo has very little tummy hair (at 2.5 years) and the pattern is similar to Joey's. Shiraz (at 5 years) has hair covering her belly, although not as thick as elsewhere on her body. Another interesting difference: Bo has no (or very little hair between his toes) while Razzy has quite a lot. |

What a cute shot. Belly hair is not in any standard. |

Puppies don't usually have much belly hair. It may or may not come in later. My Moka has very little belly hair while Avery has a real furry belly. Someone told me that it was better to have more hair as it offered some protection from scratches and stuff while hunting. Terra and Rayne, Avery's daughter and grandaughter respectively have hairy tummies too. Gail |

Our pup doesn't have any belly hair either (she's a year old). I think it is pretty normal for GSPs.
I've also noticed that males tend to have a little more hair that females on their belly...but that may just be a coincidence. |

Gail- I think that was my concern, because the couple times we had her off leash when we got home i noticed some raw spots on her belly. No big deal, but some protection would help. Its good to know its not abnormal though |

Joey, you can get chest/belly protectors to have them wear when they are out hunting/running. We have one for Benelli as she also doesn't have much belly hair. |

It falls in the catagory of 'form follows function' or as I like to say - 'form vs function'. It is desirable and I would like to see it added to the standard. |

| Belle has very little belly hair while Halo and Ringo have quite a bit of belly hair. Ringo and Halo are from the same lines and Belle comes from a different line. As for protection, Belle has had fewer belly injuries that my hairy bellied, Ringo and Halo. So, who can say if it really helps or not. As someone else posted belley hair is not mentioned in the standard, so juse enjoy that soft pink belly. |

Cute pink puppy belly is preferred though right? Murphy had no belly hair when he was a pup and now he has some...but not too much... but not enough to protect him from a few scrapes and brush burns. Nothing too bad though... |

| Xara has no belly hair either, and very little on the insides of her back legs. I love their little bald bellies LOL |

Mine has sparse belly hair after 2 years. When I pet or bathe him I am always feeling his nipples and thinking they are ticks.
I have not tried to pull one off, yet. |

Joeybean, where do you live and where was she raised? All our Arizona dogs and the vast majority of the pups we've bred and sold are pretty hairless on their bellies. But those that live in very cold climates (like North Dakota) grow a little dusting of belly hair after living there quite a while. At least that's been my experience.
