I just received my Runner's World magazine and they had an article on running with dogs. I just thought I would share that they recommended our breed for more serious runners.

"Sporting breeds such as German Shorthaired (and Wirehaired) Pointers, Vizla's and Weimaraners make first class running dogs. These dogs tend to be able to go long distances --over 10 miles--and get into the zone."

This is a new article series and I hope they go into a bit more detail about running with dogs. I love to run with my dogs but there are a lot more things to consider than what they mentioned in this one page article before taking a dog on a 10 mile run.

I've run over 20 marathons and shorthairs have always been my best training partners. When properly conditioned, they can breeze through your longest training runs and they love it. I've always been able to train on wooded trails with streams and lakes available for cooling purposes. To me this is ideal. Be mindful of running young dogs long distances, hard surfaces, and ambient temperature.
