Hi to all and am glad I found this site!

I retired a couple of years ago and REALLY want a bird dog now that I have more time to spend to get one right..  Had a few about 25 years ago but never one I could really depend on.  After a few months research I think the GSP is the one.

My problem is this.  I live in East Texas and don't think there is a wild bobwhite within 200 miles of here.  I read that the quail population is only 18% of what is was 40 years ago and I know I haven't seen any lately.  Looked at some leases and they were wanting $375.00 A DAY to hunt.  Is this a dying sport?  Where do you guys hunt?  I could raise some quail and throw them out in the pasture but that is not much of a sport to me.

Any replies would be welcomed.

Thanks

I know what your saying. Here in California (at least my area) we have a very minimal amount of land we can hunt on. We go to Fish and game and get drawn, but there are a thousand other hunters doing to same, so our chance of being drawn is very slim. We finnaly broke down and joined a club. Its not as fun as wild game because the birds dont realy want to fly, LOL. we can choose from Bob white, pheasant, chucker and  a few others. I would just say do some more research and contact you local Fish and game and see what they have to say. I dont think its a dying sport, we are just loosing more usable land. good luck and dont give up yet, Andrea

You need to retire and move to the midwest where there is still a lot of farm land and friendly people who will let you hunt if you ask permission and are respectful of their property---just kidding about the moving. When I was a kid back there (longer ago than I care to think) we hunted mainly pheasants and ducks. Last summer when we were back we saw partridge and wild turkeys.
