Ok I am looking at getting this pup from a local breeder to show and do field trails and hunt tests with and was wondering what everyones opinions on her are. She is 12 weeks old in these pictures and didnt want to hold still for them. I also was wondering if her eyes look lighter will they get darker with age or are they the color they are going to be by now and do you think they are too light?
Thanks,
Jana

These are her younger not sure how old here.

Cute puppy!
Puppies are normally born with blue eyes and they change. From what I can tell in the pictures they look like they're at a normal phase of darkening for her age. Depending on the light my little guys have gone from blue to a greenish shade, now the brown is showing up more and they are darkening. Not sure if it's true but I was told to look at the dark rim around the iris, the wider the line the darker the eye will get. If it's thin or no line the eyes will be light. |

I'm not the best judge of conformation so I'll withhold any stupid judgement I can make. What I can say is that it is way to early to tell how the puppy will develop, especially in eye color. I Have seen pups develope a slight roach that was not visible or present before 5 months old. The best way to know your prospect is to take a good look at the grandparents and parents. Does the breeder produce uniform and consistent litters? Francine |

Like Francine said, the dogs behind the pup will tell you more than anyone here can. from the photos anyway. The breeder should also be able to assess her to some extent. But yes, this is one freakin' cute puppy! And she looks like she already knows how to have fun |

At 12 weeks it is really too late to judge conformation. The general consensus is a pup will be closest to their adult look at 8 weeks + or - a couple of days. After that they are all over the map until they are mature which may not happen until they are 2 YO or older. What I can say is the eyes typically darken quite a bit in the first 2 years. She also has nice markings that will not create any optical illusions that will hurt you in the ring. She is also a nice dark brown which should continue to darken as she ages. Her bones look nice and she has a nice head with a pretty feminie look. All pluses in my opinion. She is a bit leggy, but she is at that age where that is normal. As pixie said, at this point the parents and grandparents are likely to give you the best clue as to how nice she will be when she is grown. She seems to be certainly interested in birds which is good. How is her personality? Is she confident and outgoing? Those are essential in both the show ring and in the field. Also does she have a nice scissor bite? |

Thanks everyone the breeder thinks she is a good canidate for what I want. She also was evaulated by another breeder and found to be a great show canidate. The mom is a nice girl and in her only show appearance she went Best bred by, winners bitch and best opposite and has two legs towards her SH title. Dad is full of FC and some show champions. A half sister to mom (same granddam of this pup) is a CH and JH and placed 7th out of 25 dogs at the nationals a few years ago (made the cut). So I think she has the lines was just curious about the eyes mainly if they where going to be too light.
Bev I have been told her bite is good I will see her in person next weekend and make final descions but hoping that things work out and she will be coming home next weekend.
Thanks everyone,
Jana

Judging by her avatar she has already made a decision " src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/blue/emoticons/biggrin.gif" />.
If your able to take her out into a field. Doesnt have to be a hunting field but even a school field or somewhere with some long grass on the edges (you want 2 or 3 feet at the least) low traffic or none is even better.
As for the long grass I like to find a field where there are lots of patches or rows of it. So I can walk through it and see what puppy does when it is on one side and I am on the other. Also when walking through the long grass this give me a good idea of how bold a puppy is.
Now unhook the leash, keep your mouth shut and start walking. See what puppy does, if puppy is running around like a banshee investigating everything and not shying away you got a great trial and show prospect. If puppy cowers and looks like she is going to pee herself best find another litter.
Dont worry about pointing or anything, just walk, keep your mouth shut and watch.
I brought my guy home almost 4 years (wow really that long) ago late in the evening. The next morning bright and early he was in bird territory for big ole roosters. He didnt find any but this is what I ended up with on that day.

For an hour thats all I seen was the rear end of that dog. Thats what your looking for when you take yours out.

Ryan thanks for the advice I am not sure if there will be any fields nearby we are both driving about 4 1/2 hours to meet up next weekend but I will definatly be taking her out during the week to a few fields and will see how she reacts. I have talked to the breeders a lot and they say she is super smart (already house trained and going to the door to ask to be let out) and is really outgoing and happy pup so I am excited to meet her. I was orginally suppost to pick her up this weekend but it got post poned till next weekend so she will hopefully be coming home with me next sunday. I am really excited and just cant wait she will get lots of field play time and on birds. We also plan on the weekend after we get her going grouse hunting so she can have some fun with some birds. I am sure I will be asking for tons of advice I have trained retrievers for hunting before but never pointers so this is a new experiance for me. Jana |

Bev she has been introduced to gun fire and had no issues but we will definatly slowly work it in might not acually take a shot but just let her go chase some grouse that weekend after just to let her be on some birds. I do appriciate the warning we didnt introduce our golden to gunfire till she was 9 months old and she did awesome never had an issue at all but I did it with her playing with her favorite toy a ways away while my husband fired the shotgun and then we brought her closer and closer and since she was comfortable by the end of the day we had her by us and shooting and as my husband would shoot I would throw her duck retriver and let her go get it she got to where if she heard gun fire or fireworks she got all excited lol. |
