I have been told that when the dog goes on point and then even moves a slight muscle to launch the bird out of the launcher at that moment and that it will end up teaching the dog to hold point and not creep....

Here is my thinking....to me it seems like you would be rewarding the dog for creeping as when they do the bird flys, you shoot it and they get the bird. To me I guess I would think the dog would figure out that if the bird flys they get it thus they would want to creep more???

I  want to get a bird launcher but want to make sure I understand how it will really help in dog training for birds.

Thanks for the input in advance!

If the dog creeps, you pop the bird out of the launcher but you don't shoot it. It's as if the bird flushed on it's own. If the dog holds steady on point, then you pop the bird and shoot it for the dog to retrieve..

So my line of thinking wasn't totaly off! :-) On my male we didn't use a launcher at all but I thought I would try it out on my two younger GSP's as we will start them in the field after deer season here in Michigan.
Thanks!

You have to train the dog to Stop to Flush for this to work first. The dog should know that if theres a bird in the air it stops other wise your are defeating the purpose of launching the bird.

I don't teach stop to flush first. That said, some dogs (particularly of another breed that I train a lot of) get as much out of chasing birds as they do pointing or retrieving them, these dogs I will teach a modified whoa to so I can stop the chase. Then start on the launchers, and it works the same.

You should use strong fly'n birds so that the dog has no chance of catching the bird once you get them to hold then you can start to steady them up to the shot and fall
