I am wondering if there are any good books any of you suggest regarding breeding and whelping with dogs?

I breed horses as well and there is this book called "Blessed are the broodmares" and it is VERY much well worth my money. Gives great descriptions, pictures etc.

I was hoping there was something like this for dog breeding as well. Thanks in advance!

I've found a book called "Successful Dog Breeding" by  Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox, DVM to be of great help when even THINKING about doing a breeding.  It covers the whole gamut from "Taking the First Step"-Chapter 1 all the way to Breed Specifics and Dispositions as well as Disorders (Appendix II).  Its published by Howell Book House, c. 1994.

There's also another called "The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog" by Holst that you may find useful.  I have no experience with it at all.

Bonnie Wilcox is a GSP breeder (or was back in the 90's) and Chris Walkowicz is an AKC Obedience and Conformation judge, as well as both extremely knowledgeable people...

I'll 2nd Phyllis on Chris' book. She is very knowledgeable and a wonderfully helpful person and it has carried through in the book with Bonnie.

I'd also look to The Monks of New Skete "The Art of Raising a Puppy" as well.

Both should be must reads before having a litter.

Also, if you go onto the AKC website (www.akc.org) and click on the Breeding button, you will find a wealth of material including book titles, and definite must read articles. And, I am reminded that
The Joy of Breeding Your Own Showdog is by Anne Seranne, whereas a book entitled Canine Reproduction is by Phyllis Holst. Lots of good stuff out there, but perhaps one that can't be beat is actually sitting in on a birthing by an experienced breeder. Its amazing the things you HAVE to have when preparing for that all important birthday. (chips, salsa, Cokes, powdered sugar donuts, half and half...LOL!)

This book comes highly recommended from sled dog central's "keeper", haven't seen it myself but thought I'd pass the recommendation along.... Canine Reproduction: The Breeder's Guide by Phyllis Holst.
