Looking for answers to three questions.  I have been approached at HT and asked if my dogs show.  Which they have not, but people I have never seen have stopped me to ask, so it makes me wonder if they should show?  I have (4) two males and two females.  Here come the questions.  If I decide to show, should I have it done or try handling myself, dogs have never been handled by anyone but me?  Second question, my older male (4) and his daugther both get sun bleaching on their heads during the summer.  How do I rectify/prevent that since my goals with the dogs are MH, UT1 and all the training that entales?  And my final question, how do judges look at scarring?  Both my males have scars, not in the face or very large but around the body from hunting.  I want to advance their titles if they are capable of titling, but not take away from their hunting and training.  Any advice is appreciated.

These are working dogs so scars and sun bleaching are not supposed to be taken into to consideration. That said, I am sure some judges will ding you for it, but there are enough that won't and if your dogs are nice examples of the breed you should be able to finish them scars and all. I have three shorthairs, 2 females and one male, and I do my own handling. I enjoy the time with the dogs and I know my girl would shut down if anyone else was on the end of the leash. My boy however could careless who shows him. I would suggest you take some handling classes to see if you like it and also get your dog trained for the show ring. If the training classes go well, then enter some small shows and handle your dogs yourself. You can always hire a handler later if 1) you think your dogs will do well, 2) you want to keep showing them, 3) you don't want to handle them. As a new owner handler myself (only been showing my girl for a little over a year), I was told all the horror stories about how you can't finish a dog that isn't handled by a pro. Well so far I have put 13 points and both majors on my girl and we are now chasing the last two points. Whatever your decide, just remember the most important thing is to have fun.

Ditto what Bev said, you can finish a dog with some scars & do it yourself if the dog is nice enough. I show my own also, they are hunting dogs (guide, competetive events & hunt) and all have a scar or 2. I have even shown one with stitches before.

Cool I will look around my area for handling lessons. I have tried to copy the test in the yard with my dogs and they do OK with that, but I know that is just playing around. Thanks for the reply and encouragement.
