I picked Chase up from the trainers yesterday and he lost ALLOT of weight while he was there. He has always been a hard keeper and tough to keep the pounds on and I guess the extra work and energy really paid a toll on him. My question is, what is the best thing to feed him right now? In conversation yesterday, I was told by one person to give him raw chicken, bones and all. Another told me to give him ground beef.  His dry food is Nutra Nuggets with no corn since it upsets his tummy and It is the only dry food he will eat.  Your advise is greatly appreciated and welcomed, Andrea

Oh, and have to say the trainer did what they could to help with his weight and were really concerned. He just wouldnt eat while he was there. So in no way do I blame them. They are the best group of people I have ever met and realy care about their animals.

Yeah, some dogs don't eat well under stress. It happens.

Straight chicken, hamburger, fish, a spoonful of lard, Annamaet's impact suppliment... it all means extra high quality quality fat and (except for the lard obviously) protien. Any of these are really 'hot' so you want to start them in small doses for a couple weeks and then increase them slowly.

In the meantime make sure he's got a warm place to stay as many hours out of the day he can. That will help keep him from burning extra calories just trying to stay warm.

Thanks Meg. He actually has been sleeping since I picked him up, LOL! I had to go to my inlaws after we picked him up and while I was getting the kids ready to leave he dissapeared, I looked at the car and he was sitting in the passenger seat looking at me like " come on, lets go already!". We had company last night and he didnt even want to go see who it was, just opened his eyes long enough to look and went right back to sleep. The rest is good for him and I'm sure he will be his normal ADHD self in a few days. Thanks again and have a great day, Andrea

Also if you are going to be brining him back to the trainer at all try and make sure you have him stay on his food. Any where you bring him bring his food. I am sure this is common sense but I just wanted to let you know.

I have also been told yogurt is good weight builder, some use vegi oil, peanut butter..... Here is another thread about the same thing on another forum as well....

Ok, so he is eating really well and even looks like he is putting on some weight again, but now he is sick! He has a nasty deep seal like cough and cant even bark. I had to get up several times through the night because I thought he was vomitting. He had his bordatella vaccine before he went so I dont know what is going on. I think the stress got to him. He has an appointment this afternoon so we will see. Thanks again ya'll. Have a great day. Andrea

There are a lot of canine 'flus' that go around in dog circles just like the kids in school. You can certainly take him to the vet to rule out pnemonia and other treatable stuff, but if it's a virus then you'll be stuck just doing supportive care and waiting it out.

Do you really use raw chicken? Bones and all? My dogs won't eat totally raw meats. I buy beef shanks and cook them partially with a little garlic. They seem to love that. I give them cooked chicken(no bones) and fish sometimes. Mine do love their plain yogurt now too.

We call Bo's yogurt his Bogey-Yogey (yes, we actually buy him his OWN yogurt ... and peanut butter, carrots and apples). He is ADDICTED. When we get in from his evening walk he races into the kitchen (even if the cat is there) and sits beside the fridge waiting for his reward.

I wasnt sure about the raw chicken thing either, still havent tried it. He loves peanut butter and carrots, I found that out the hard way when I was eating it, LOL. Gotta be carefull when you leave your snacks sitting on the coffee table unattended.
I am taking him to the vet just to make sure. I thought it could be the flu, but the fluid he is couging up is pinkish in color. Better safe then sorry. I'll let you all know when we get back. Thanks again, Andrea

Mine like the yogurt too. I bought the plain. They love peanut butter. I give them toast every morning with it and the fish oil tabs. They like the baby carrots. Especially when I get them right out of the garden. They also like the pea pods. When I am ripping the feathers out of the grouse we get they sometimes also will jump and grab the feathers out of the air. Anyone else's do that?

We just got back from the vet and he has Bronchitis. The pinkish stuff was from the irritation from coughing. His lungs are clear and the chest xray was normal, but the bronchi and throat are a mess. He probubly inhaled an irritant during training. So he will be on rest, fluids and antibiotics for 10 days. Doc also said to give him canned puppy food for the high callories and protien content to put a few pounds on him. His weight today was 47.1 pounds so he needs a few groceries in him. Thanks for your comments and concerns, Andrea

So glad Andea you took Chase to the vet. Will say a prayer that Chase recovers quickly. Two years ago we went thur a sudden diarrhea sickness bug with Rocky. He had multiple loose stools for 4 days no matter what I fed him. His weight dropped quickly way down to 72lbs, could see all of his ribs. When we got him to the Vet, she told me he was severly dehydrated. Sent us home with several antibiotics, Formula and six cans of a special science vet prescirbed diet. I had to spoon feed Rocky 4 tb spoons of formula every 2 hours for the first day. Then the next six days feed him a can of food a 4th at a time. It took him a while to regain his health. Kind of scary how fast our GSP's can get sick in the wrong invironment. I am sure Rocky ate something in the hunting field. And who knows what Chase became exposed to in his training session. He probably didn't eat normal so his resistance went down. You are in my prayers for fast recovery.

Your poor dog! I am glad you went to the vet.

As for adding on pounds, I use full fat plain yogurt (Stonyfield farm sells big tubs of organic yogurt that my dogs love), which also helps with any... digestion issues... he might get from eating more than he usually does. Sardines are also a great source of protein & good fats. As long as you can stand the smell of their breath afterwards, of course!

Good luck!

poor pooch and poor you! It's so hard when your doggies are sick, you just want to protect them. I had bronchitis myself a few years go. It was awful I had no energy to do anything and was very dehydrated. I would consider giving him a little liquid honey whilst he is sick for his throat, and maybe turn on some relaxed classical music to help him be generally more relaxed as he will need lots of rest. (I am not kidding) When I was sick I had no appetite, so you may have to work hard to get him to eat. Also, what about some aromatherapy around the room, like lavender or something. Works for humans so who knows. Good luck I will say a prayer for him too, can't hurt!

I pray that Chase is getting better. It's scary because you know something is wrong but they can't tell you. Hope you get well soon Chase. Mocha, Hunter, Doddi, Stud, & Belle are wishing you well.
