Hi there.

I am relatively new with a gsp.  Our female, all liver is 8 months old.  We understand that they are a short haired dog, but we are getting concerned with the shortness (or what appears to be almost a lack of) hair around her eyes.  Is it common to be able to see the skin around their eyes?  The hair appears to me to be very thin, but we are new to this, so maybe we are just being over paranoid.  She does itch a bit, but certainly not excessively.

I am also brand new to this forum, maybe it would help if I posted a picture and some could provide feedback?

hmmm, that would mean I have to figure out how to post a picture next!!!

thank you for any feedback/advice you can offer.

I would have a vet look at it, maybe do a scrape. May be some Demodex, or there is a skin disease in GSP's called Lupoid Dermitosis, nothing to fool around with.  Probably not, but ought to be checked out.

Posting a picture would help.  There is a sticky under General on how to post picts. She could have a food allergy too which can cause skin issues especially on the face.  Is there redness or irritation? Does she have any discharge from her eyes?

Here are some pictures of my dogs so you can get an idea of how their fur on the face should look.

Thank you very much. I looked up Demodex and found some pics that do look a lot like the thinning we have. The picture referred to localized demodicosis. I called our vet, and she too recommended coming in for a scrape. So that is what we will do.

Thank you for the pictures. Charlee's hair is definetly thinner around her eyes. There is no redness in her eyes, but there is frequent discharge. Which most commonly appears after sleeping, I figured this was common.

I will take pictures tonight and see what you think.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

If there is any suspicion about Lupoid Dermitosis check out "GSP Breed Help" another thread in this section.

I realize I am a bit late here, but if the thinning is symmetrical it is more of an indicator of an autoimmune disorder. Since it's a puppy, mange would be my first guess too, but sometimes autoimmune disorders start with the thinning of the hair around the eyes (ears and feet also).

The best way to tell the difference is if it's symmetrical or not. Random, asymmetrical hair loss is more indicative of mange, whereas symmetrical hair loss is more indicative of an autoimmune disorder.

The funny thing is, both are actually "disorders of the immune system," as mange itself is nothing but an indicator of a weak immune system in a pup. Lots of times they grow out of it as they (and their immune system) matures, but sometimes they don't.

Faulty immune systems are often indicators of faulty feeding practices. In other words, many people who feed cheap, store-bought kibble (with lousy ingredients like corns, wheats, glutens, etc.) scratch their heads and wonder "why" their dog is falling apart ... with shabby coats, mange spots, and itching all the time ... and never stop to consider the fact that what they're feeding the dog is the problem.

Oftentimes the dry kibble itself, with the "cheap" ingredients (that dogs really aren't supposed to eat) are the very reason they're dogs are having these problems. Any organism that is steadily fed a diet of something that it really isn't supposed to eat, is going to break down sooner or later ...

I suggest you try oatmeal soap. This can help in the hair growth.

German Shorthaired Pointer training is something I need to put in my mind and heart to make it successful.
