Kota is now 4 months old.  We live in the suburbs but he likes to sniff out squirrels, cats (although he's affraid of them) & he likes to lay on & try to get the scent of dead worms all over him.  Didn't know worms had a scent when they aren't in mud.  Regardless, we were at a family members land on Saturday night.  Kota's bionic sniffer was in overdrive.  He got the scent of something & made this guttural or clicking type of noise.  Is that a clue for us that he's on to something?  We are not hunters & he will not be trained to hunt, but it's interesting knowing all of his breed traits.

You know, we've also learned that through our pre-purchase research, the books all refer to GSP's as being "energetic and lively."  We've come to realize that this is a politically correct way of saying "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder."  The boy has energy!

cooper's mom,
not sure about the noise but you're sure on track that they're adhd dogs. I have an adhd son & thought 'what the heck have I done, I have a adhd dog as well'! On the bright side, they do calm down, although every once in a while...:)

One more thing ....Kota is a snorer. He snores like an old man. Sometimes he has a lot of nasal congestion. We are going to the vet this week for shots so I'll ask for a really good nasal exam.

Seven makes that sound tooo, it's actually the air moving through their sinuses...if you look closely you'll see the top of Kota's head moving up and down.

We call Bo our little geiger counter. When he is on the trail of something you can hear him coming a good distance away. He is not a hunter, nor will he be. We actually got him a reflective vest for the dark winter nights since I think he was scaring people in the neighbourhood when they'd hear this "Snrk, snrk ..." noise coming up behind them. We also oink at him 'cuz I swear that's what he sounds like sometimes :)

And when he's in a REALLY deep sleep, you can hear those puppy snores a couple houses over. That's when we know he's out for a good, long time.

It is called "plowing". He is forcing air out of his nose and through the slits in his nose(can't remember the proper name for the slits) which causes a vortex/cyclonic sort of air pressure which pushes scent up off the ground and the snort is actually him taking the air back in from this vortex. It is typically done when scenting is tougher due to atmospheric conditions, whether that be extremely dry air, extremely humid, etc... It is almost on the verge of hyperventilating when they really get going. There have been a number of recent studies done on this activity recently in the K9 world.

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

Bruce is plowing a good thing?  Do dogs with great noses do it or is it ones trying hard to scent because their nose isn't as good or none of the above?

Hey Matt,

It's not a bad thing and is not really representative of the dogs quality of nose. It is just something that they will do to help lift scent molecules up into their nose when scenting conditions are very tough. Dry and arid, or wet and humid. I also forgot to mention, they will do this on an older track where scent molecules have dissipated and are very few. The studies done on this activity have been pursued most heavily in Search and Detection work.

Thanks so much. I'm fascinated by the scientific explanation. It makes complete sense. Kota is teaching us a lot.
