I believe that if you are selling a pup you should be responsible to screen your potential buyers so that they meet the standards that you want. I think contracts that regulate breeding, hunting, showing are not something I would want when purchasing a puppy. If I am paying to buy a dog it should be mine and not Co- Owned. Maybe this is just my opinion because I know myself and how to treat my dogs properly and some people are crazy.

I think contracts also protect the breeder though, as well as the puppy, it is hard to judge a person who is buying a pup from you. I was "had" with my last litter for the first time. Sold a nice female to a competetive person who sounded very legit.
Not only was she crated 24-7 (lost tail hair=rubbed off, was pee stained * NEVER peed in my house or her crate), but she was beaten up pretty good by his other dog, still draining/treating an abcess on her throat & she had many puncture wounds. TG I got her back!! She was gone 6 weeks, when I got her back, she was also very thin & wouldnt let a man pet her.
Last night at handling class she was MUCH better with men & much more "up" in attitude. I am keeping her now, will not re-sell her, maybe it was fate I got her back, she is a dynamite little field dog & a real sweetie & very finishable.
Contracts that stipulate some sort of show/field work be done and all health cerfs prior to breeding help protect ones lines as well......no one wants a puppy that was bred through careful thought, hard work proving the parents & love for the breed to be bred to unproven, unchecked dogs. Most use contracts to try to protect the breed they love, not to dupe a buyer.
I co-own 3 of my dogs, they live with me, never had an issue with them. Just had to agree on breedings with them was all, no big deal as we had the same taste/goals for the dogs. One was spayed & never bred, she just didnt turn out as I wanted for a brood bitch even though she had field and show points. (she was smallish, slight bone, etc)

Thats a tough situation to have someone treat a pup like that. I have no tolerance for people who neglect their dogs or other animals. I think you should treat your pup as if it is just another member of the famliy. there are great pets and amazing companions. Good luck with the pup.

Thank you. It is tough & the hardest thing about breeding a litter, making sure they all go to good homes. My babes are all raised inside & have the run of the house from 5 weeks on when I am home. My old boys love to play with pups, it helps housebreaking (PIA running a whole litter out every 20 minutes though, LOL!!)
so finding out one is being treated poorly is a tough thing to bear.
She is doing well though, very social again, greeting all clients at work & happy.

I have respect for breeders that request a buyer enter a dog in a venue. If a breeder breeds for show, hunt, ect they will want to have their litters evaluated in their chosen venue as a way to judge their breeding program. Buyers should respect this wish and if not buy from another breeder. If a breeder will only sell to a show or hunting home I respect this as well and a buyer should not mislead a breeder.
Some breeders rely heavily on the feedback of buyers and venues to evaluate their breeding programs - while I don't like a contract the breeders I have delt with know I will hunt and hunt test a dog I buy from them.
A breeder like this should make a buyer feel comfortable in their decision to purchase a puppy.Responsible, dedicated breeders have rights, too.

I'm not a breeder but I think contracts are very important. Breeders without any contract are not reliable breeders.

German Shorthaired Pointer training is something I need to put in my mind and heart to make it successful.
