My name is Gunther and I was recently rescued in Bloomington, Indiana. My shelter paperwork says that I am 15 months old but the foster mom that I had thought that I was 10-12 months old and my new best friend, Matt, is leaning towards 10 months. I weighed 39 pounds when rescued and I am approximately 22 inches tall. Anyone have any ideas simply based on that information and some photos?

Our guy is 4.5 months, about 20 inches high and 33-34 pounds. I would almost think you are looking at a much younger dog, or one who has seriously not been taken care of ... the vet would probably be able to tell by his teeth.

With how white his teeth are, how relativly unbalanced his body is compared to his head and some other things that havent matured yet. I would say that anywhere from 10-15 months would be a good guess.
Its hard to base age on size and weight because you don't know there lineage. Wiithout seeing his parents and possibly even some older grand parents you wont know how big he is going to be or should be.
You also cant say that he wasn't taken care of because he is smaller at an older age. I have seen 19 inch tall 45 lb shorthairs before. He could just be a smaller dog. He looks pretty happy and healthy to me. (eyes are clear, not immaciated, no wounds, etc)
Did you give this guy a home or are you helping look for one? |

| Yes, I gave him a home. The foster mom was actually the director of the shelter and she was going to adopt him but I lucked out and just happened to call at the right time and forced her to make a decision. He appears to have cat issues so it made her decision a little easier. |

Since Justin has more experience with the breed I will defer to him in terms of the dog's age. He's a real nice looking dog and I hope everything works out for you.

| Me too. I took a crate outdoors so I could try to play with Jake or train Gunther while the other one watched. That didn't work too well as they were both more interested in being with the other. |

He looks young, I'd say under 1 LOL not that, that helps. He is very cute, looks like your going to be on your toes! Since you have the other dog, I bet that helps a little they get to tire each other out. |

I've heard it said if bottom teeth are tall still, they are young. If all ground down to a pulp; old. But there are so many "if's" to that....like IF the dog is a bone chewer, or rock chewer, or chain chewer, will wear teeth down faster, further. Not always whiteness, cuz junk dog food, or soft dog food will stain teeth faster then say a crunchy, hard food diet, or teeth cleaner type bones. My old pointer has very white teeth, but her bottoms are ground down to nubs. She gets teeth cleaners, but that will not stop normal, aging, wear and tear on them. Teeth make processing age, hard in my opinion.
What I see is his chest has not really dropped and filled in yet, which tells me he is young. By two, that chest will deepen and drop in most cases. |

Our first GSP, Diamond, was just 9 mts when we got him and he looked very similar to your boy in size/proportion etc. He still had a little growing to do....and though I didn't notice at the time, he still had some more liver ticking to fill in (looking back at pictures he really white, still ticked but more white)
He's a good looking dog though....actually he's a little Diamond look a-like, made me smile thanks for posting those pics |
