Ok even though I won't be needing one for like another 7 months atleast. I still want to start looking at which one I want to get. This will be used for training and hunting so it must be atleast able to do atleast 1000 yards and be waterproof. I would like to know what kind people use on here name of collar and brand and maybe around what the cost is, what you like about it and what you don't like about it. Also if there have been ones that you bought that you didn't like and why. This would help me out so much. Oh also what is a good lengh check cord for a puppy? If you want to add anything too that would be great to get for a puppy that would be fine too. I don't want to have to run out to the store b/c we forgot something important. This isn't our first dog but our first GSP and well she is already our baby. She already has a trip planned for Petsmarts to pick out her toys and a few treats when we get her. We are picking out which girl we want this Sunday and go pick her up from the breeder Nov.11th. She will be in the house most the time and we already have her metal cage with puppy divider, we get her food next weekend(have to drive 30 min but thats ok don't want to change what the breeder is feeding her), Few blankets, soft training collar for puppy classes, Small water bucket, baby gates and few toys.
This is what I know we need: food bowl (can't deside what we want yet), to get puppy training pads or not to get (I will be home with her all the time), Dog pillow what kind if any, toys that work out good for GSP's "must haves" what type of leash for walks (street walking not field runs). If you guys can add anything that you think I am missing that would help too.
Thanks guys for all the help! Just to excited to even think b/c the time has finally come to pick her out this weekend. I have pictures of all the pups but i can't wait to post and say this one is ours!

I have used the sport dog 400 ($160) and the tritronic field 90 that I bought re-furbish from cabelas for $300. The only thing that I liked about the s.d. is that remote is small and easy to use. It takes a long time to charge, batteries ran out at an unpredictable rate and it only seemed to work about 80% of the time if the collar was wet. The T.T. charged fast and held it for a long time, works 100% of the time regardless of what happens to it, but the remote isn't my favorite.
As far as check chords go once the pup is big enough to start bird training I use a 25'. Try permatack.com, they won't rot or get all muddy and soggy.
My wife used the pads for her papillons but if you will be home all the time just take her out a lot and the usual times like after a meal and when they wake up. Get a flexi lead for walks around the house, my fav. b/c it takes the slack out of they lead automatically, very handy feature for a pup! Get some stuff for her to chew on like some Nylabones and a Kong, resist a bunch of rawhide stuff. As far as toys go get what you want but maybe avoid stuff that sqeaks b/c they teach themselves to chomp down a bunch on what's in their mouth and can be hard to break them of later( you don't want birds to be ground up when they retrieve)
Just remember that it's a pup so let her just have fun and teach her the basics for the first few months, oh, and take lots of pictures. Good luck.

Congratulations. You will have a lot of fun. I do have a question. 1,000 yards?Do you know how far that is?Okay, 2 questions. Hopefully you are not getting a dog that will be that independant and un-cooperative.Unless you plan on having an AA dog. Go with any name brand model and choose which features you like. I would recomend a 30-50' cord and don't let go of it (when outdoors)until your dog is recalling 99% of the time.Yard wok is the most important training.Your dog needs to obey in several different locations in all obedience commands until you can assume they understand. Then you can take the dog to another level - on leash but you walk away, off leash, obeying from 100 yards away from you, ect. The best piece of advice would be to find a training program you agree with and stick with it. Francine |

| Yes 1000 yards is a little over 1/2 a mile I want to make sure I have the range if I need it. And as having an AA dog we haven't deside for sure yet we will be hunting sometimes off an ATV. Well that and she will be big game hunting too. So that is another reason I may need the 1000 yards. For home I need 400 yards the most. |

1/2 mile range is good, and more than 95% of the dogs need. I suggest a dogtra 1700ncp. Fully adjustable sensitivity, 1/2 mile range, water proof, and has a lcd screen on the transmitter so you know your intensity level. Not to mention there very dependable. Should cost around 179.99. Check Gundogsupply.com 25 ft is fine for a check chord. Just have the essentials. Food, water, Food and water bowls, Bones, chew toys, a flat buckle collar and whatever type of leash you like. 25ft Flexi lead is great for all scenarios. |

I have a few questions on this subject as well. I have been looking at gundogsupply.com at ecollars recently as I intend on getting a puppy in the near future.
The model you stated the 1700ncp is on there for $299 for the 1 dog system 2 dogs is $430. Are you getting prices from somewhere else or is there a way to look at rebuilt prices?
The sport dog 800 is $200 1 dog, $300 2 dog. The SD1800 is $240 1 dog and $340 2 dog. The upland 1850 with bepper is $380 1 dog and $580 for 2 dogs.
I have no problem buying a rebuilt unit but did not see pricing on them. I am leaning towards the 2 dog system because I intend on getting a 2nd dog a year or two later. Obviously I would like this to be a 1 time purchase that will last a few years but can't break the bank. Any other suggestions on the collars you guys have liked/disliked and places that might have better prices or rebuilt units?
1st post but have lurked around here for a while doing research. |

Length and weight of the check cord is dependant on the size of your dog. A twenty pound puppy is going to have a hard time hauling a half inch cc'd that's 20' long through heavy grass. I start puppies out with about eight feet of 1/4" nylon rope just so they get used to the pull around their necks and it gets them leash broke in a hurry. As they get bigger the cc'd gets thicker and longer. When it comes to e collars it's more about personal preferences amongst the big three Tri tronics, DT systems, and Dogtra. Sport dog is the "economy model" and their stuff isn't bad, and their higher end units are pretty darn good. I use the DT systems collars and I'm very pleased with them. TT though by far has the best battery life. When you look at the range of the collar remember that's not the normal effective range, that's the maximum range on flat ground with no obstructions. A collar that's rated for one mile is only really effective to about a half mile in most cases because of obstructions to the line of sight. Trees and brush nullify radio waves pretty effectively especially with signals at such a low power. In dense cover a collar rated for 1 mile might or might not be effective at 300 yards. There's nobody better to do business with than Steve Snell at www.gundogsupply.com If you tell him your needs he will recommend to you what will work best, not what he needs to sell the most of that day. He is a serious bird hunter and uses everything he recommends. CR |

| I use the SD 1200 2 dog system, batteries in the collar can be changed out, I run 3 or 4 times before a re charge. 3 years and no problems which is a first. I tried DT and others didnt like em, innotek was worst IMHO. |

TriTronics employs American assemblers who pay taxes in this country. For that reason alone you should support them. |

That and the TT customer service is second to none. They quality is also the best. Of all the training supplies to cheap out on the ecollar is the one thing you should buy the best you can afford. I would second Charlie here when I say buy the 1 mile collar because of obstructions. |

| Oh and BTW francine 1000 yards isnt really that far when you consider how fast a dog can run when he is chasing a rabbit or deer. |

Yup so do I but the dog needs to be running after the deer or rabbit to trash break it right? Der
The half mile collar you suggest is only good in any hunting area for maybe half at best. A dog can run out of that 1/4 mile rang in a matter of seconds.
Buy the longest range and top quality collar you can afford and if you cant afford the 1mile collar save up for it. |

Isn't that what the collar is for?(one of the resons anyway) To stop a dog. What good is the collar if you can't stop your dog,on known commands, within the first 50'? Francine |

Pretty hard to stop the dog from running a rabbit when he is out of ecollar range. I doubt you can yell 1/4 mile as well. |

Ryan, why would a foot hunting dog be out 1/4 mile? That's 1,300',isn't it? So, you are talking about a dog that is out of hearing range, out of handling range and is going to chase game. And you rely on the collar to "handle" this? Something just doesn't make all that much sense to me. Am I missing something? Francine |
