hi. new here. had a question on split nails.  my pup got three split nails.  the tips of his nails get clipped, regularly. first time he got a split nail, took him to the vet and it got pulled off the nail bed. took him to the vet that first time bc he was limping. it healed, grew out nicely but split again.  now, he has split nails on his other paws.  i don't know what to do.  i haven't rushed him to the vet yet bc he is not limping. is there anything i can do at home?

one of the split nails he chewed off.

Wow! That's a lot of split nails. When you say his nails are cut regularly, how short are you keeping them ? You can try smoothing the edges with one of those acrylic emery boards after clipping also, as they do get rough edges caught and the outer nail can split off the underlying cuticle as well as having the nail split right up the middle. (Personally, I prefer using a dremel to smooth edges after I finish clipping).

I would get some EMT Gel and put into the cracked nail, and then seal the entire nail with super glue. Certainly you don't want the whole nail becoming infected and our guys are so darned stoic about showing pain. They just don't and so we don't realize they are really hurting until they really need attention. What are you feeding, also? Our nails have a tendency to split and cracked nails with a nutritional deficiency, its altogether possible that our pup's nails do the same.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

I posted this on to answer your question under General, but thought I would copy this here as well.

If dirt or bacteria gets inside the split and you superglue it shut you can end up with an infection (that assumes the split opens up the nail bed.  So if the nail bed is exposed I think I would clean it first with warm soapy (anti-bacterial soap) water, dry it with a clean towel and then use the superglue and thread.

I use a dremel to grind down toenails on my crew (I don't use clippers at all anymore) and have never had a problem with split nails. I do know that a guillotine type clipper will split a nail if used on a dog when it is dull.  So, if you use that type of clipper make sure the blades are sharp. I think if the nail is splitting easily I would look at diet too.  Maybe the zinc supplement or maybe just changing foods would help.

I am not a showring person but keep my girl's nails as short as I can because she runs through the fields like the devil.

The shorter the better, and the best way to do this without cutting the quick is to dremel. I dremel at least once a week and like Phyllis, I smooth the edges, and also the underside. Over time, the quick will recede if you keep them short. When the dog stands, the nails should not touch the ground. I want them well above the ground.

So far so good.
