It is not possible to > know how > this "group point" came about, > Jere ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes, it is possible... the 'group point' is a consequence of one dog pointing and the others crowding in to do their own pointing. It looks good in a photograph but what happens when four pLabs try to point the same wild pheasant? Right, nobody gets a shot and the bird is long gone before you get to the dogs. It is possible for two dogs to wind up pointing the same bird without any interactions between the dogs but it's unlikely and stealing a point is the worst part of poor manners on game. If another dog steals a point from one of my dogs I am royally pissed, especially when my dog has pointed at 20 yards and the other dog runs in half way between my dog and the bird and points at 30 feet. Most often when my dog has a point and another dog tries to steal the point the result is a flushed bird and no shot. That's the result of trying to get a dog to back by training with a bird. I can also tell you that if your training method teaches your dog to steal points it won't take long for you to have no hunting companions. I have a half dozen aquaintances who trained 'backing' with trap held birds who are nice guys but I won't hunt with them because their dogs steal points from the other dogs and absolutely ruin a nice day in the field. Train your dog that backing has nothing to do with birds! I can give you a nice sequential system for training sight backing without a bird that leads to no point stealing problems. Cj
