hello all, we (my dog gunner and I) were recently out for a good long much needed walk the other day at a spot where they recently had a youth pheasent hunt the previous week.. i figured there'd be some hold over birds so i took a shot... Now hes only 12 wks old and has had no intro to birds but i thought that he could just sniff around and play in the area that we would be hunting next year.... on the first pass through the winter wheat we flushed 3 hens of corse he had no clue they were a good 50yrds in front but i picked him up and brought him to the spot of the flush so he could at least get the scent... as we walked through the fields we flushed 3 more one being a nice rooster which caught me off guard but the dog paid no attention... same thing put him in the area of the flush... by now i figured that this was a pretty successful day he was out in the area of which we would hunt and the were birds even though he was more interested in other things i felt good..... on the way out gunner (my dog) was about ten feet in front of me when a rooster flushed he instantly locked up and was staring at the bird in flight...watching it land about 100yrds down the field row wanted to go after it...this i felt was a perfect time to quit.... now im just a beginner and this is my first dog but i think thats a good start the flush never spooked him and it was close i think i was more startled than he..lol interested in what a 12wk gsp should be doing and if im on the right track...... any thoughts?????
