We have a pup who will be 6 months old March 20. We are meeting with a trainer on Thrusday to start his hunt training.. It this too young? What age do they normally start?
I introduced my boy, Ringo, to birds at 4 months. He is now one leg away from his Junior Hunter and is 9 months. I am not sure I would do formal hunt training at 6 months, but certainly introduction to birds and the basics would be no problem.
These pups were started on birds at 8 weeks, by 12 weeks I was killing birds over them. By 16 weeks they were pointing staunchly, retrieving to hand, and backing.
These pictures were taken yesterday. The youngest is about 16 weeks, the oldest about 19 weeks old. All have now had at least a dozen birds killed for them individually and I usually shoot a bird or two for them each day I work them now.
All they'll do at this stage is point, back, and retrieve to hand.
I don't start any formal obedience or manners (manners on birds) training till about 18mos when they are first worked on a check cord; barring problems that is.
