As someone who recently (about 2 years ago) was in your shoes, I would recommend finding a conformation class and taking lessons.  That will help you and the dog.  Also, there is a great book for beginners in the show world called, Dog Showing for Beginners by Lynn Hall.  Go to some dog shows and watch the breed judging for shorthairs, you will learn allot.  After the competition catch some of the folks and talk to them (don't bother them before they show though).

Get comfortable stacking your dog.  You need to know what a good stack looks like from above.  Practice with your dog, preferrably in front of a mirror.  You want to get to where you put the dog in a stack and he will hold it.  Figure out what excites your dog and use it to bait your dog.  It may be food, it may be a toy, or something else. Finally, learn to move with your dog.  You need to figure out the right speed to get your dog to gait beautifully.

Now you know why I made the original suggestion, find a class or a mentor to work with you.  There is allot that goes into making your dog look the best in the ring.  Anyone that tells you this is easy or doesn't require work isn't showing their dog to advantage.  There is an art to handling.

Most importantly of all though, you and your dog should have FUN.  If the only way this will be fun is for you to win, find something else to do with your dog.  It is hard for a newbie owner handler to finish dog, period. It can be done, but it takes determination and perserverance and thick skin.  So, go into this with you eyes wide open and have a blast with your dog.

Good Luck!!! If you have any specific questions, just holler.

Oh, I forgot to mention, find some matches or fun matches to start out with.  Also, there is more than one venue for showing your dog.  I started out in UKC as they do not allow professional handlers so I figured it was a more level playing field.  There is also International shows where they actually do a written evaluation.  This is good because you get someone elses opinion of your dogs good points and weaknesses.  This will help you in showing your dog to advantage.

Yes, bait is used to get there attention and keep them motivated/excited.  My girl wouldn't go for food though, I finally found what worked with her, a laser pointer.

Just FYI, if you show in the UKC they do not allow food in the ring unless the judge approves it ahead of time.  So, be sure and ask.
